blog looks terrible in Internet Explorer!
-
My blog: http://peggiesplace.wordpress.com – Just today, I discovered that my blog which looks great in Safari and Firefox is the absolute pits in Internet Explorer (5 for the MAC). Is there any way to fix it without messing up how it is viewed in other browsers? Does it look this bad in updated MIE browsers? Thanks.

Actually, it looks pretty bad in IE7. (Looking bad in IE5 or 6 isn’t unusual. Looking bad in IE7 is.) Did you paste some stuff in your widgets from some other blog, by chance? For example, you have a link to haloscan comments, which we can’t use here. And your Site Meter link doesn’t show in FF but does show in IE7.
The problem seems to be somewhere in your sidebar, because the sidebar background is showing up throughout the blog.

I did copy and paste alot of sidebar material from the old BLOGGER I had…….so what do I do?
The sidebar is supposed to be on the right side of the text; instead it is at the bottom – I just found this out tonight and am flabbergasted! I had no idea!

I’d remove one widget at a time (copying the text into a text editor, like notepad, before doing so) and see which one of them is causing the problem. Once you have located the problem widget (and it is possible that there is more than one), then you can fix it before putting it back.

It’s a lot better now. Whatever you took out fixed the problem, at least in IE7. I doubt you will get IE5 to look right. It’s an old browser and almost no one uses it anymore. (The Sitemeter thing still isn’t displaying in FF, BTW)

IE5 for Mac is even farther behind than IE5 for Windows and there are a lot of things that it simply cannot do. Sorry to say, but you really need to upgrade. I would check out Firefox to see if they have a version that will work with your OS version and also check out Opera and Flock to see if they have one.

OK…..we’ve got a breakthrough, I THINK…..I have a friend who figured it out – maybe you’ll want to hire her – grin!
Here is the problem:
It is NOT at http://peggiesplace.wordpress.com – the main entry page is looking fine as far as we know. The problem (with the sidebar showing on the bottom) is on the ARCHIVED pages or PERMALINKS of IE5 and IE7.
Here is an example: http://peggiesplace.wordpress.com/2008/11/17/whats-in-your-basket-a-thanksgiving-inventory/Safari and Firefox are fine with this sub-page but IE5 and IE7 shows sidebar on the archived page at the BOTTOM. (By the way there are NO upgrades to MIE for the MAC – I do not use it, just keep it for reference in situations like this! I use SAFARI as my preferred browser.)
Maybe THIS will give you a clue…….I’m not concerned if the SiteMeter doesn’t show, but I would like to get that sidebar on the right where it should be – in IE7 (forget IE5!) – if that is possible.
Thank you so much!

Hmm – you are correct that single post page has the sidebar at the bottom. But I can’t figure out why it is happening. I’m using the same theme on one of my blogs and it doesn’t happen. So there must be some code somewhere in one of your widgets that is causing this.
-
Andrew, you’re sharp – maybe we should both get on Angela Lansbury’s “Murder She Wrote” and help her out too – grin!
If the consensus is that a code in a widget is causing this, my obsessive compulsive nature will be back at it again – if I ever solve it, I’ll let you know and we’ll party!
Thanks, team – you’ve been great. I wish FeedBurner had such efficient service, but then that is another story!

Hmmmmmm……I’ve been digging around in the forums and discovered that the problem MAY be that I am using HTML and the system prefers XHTML…….so I either have to learn XHTML and re-do ALL my copy – main text and sidebars – (a humongous job I would not undertake for a million dollars) – or let it be as is……..and I think I will do just that. I DO have an XHTML for Dummies and may look it over to get a few tips on coding but i think it is mainly going to be “what you see is what you get!” The content is more important than the visual appearance anyway – unless it was looking really raggedy, and I think it could pass, not perfect, but satisfactory. Some browsers appear to be more forgiving than others – I like the ones that forgive!!
Thanks much for all your help!

New discovery: WordPress automatically converts my HTML text to XHTML for the text……..but NOT for the sidebar widgets I add myself…….They are HTML and I tried to change my
codes to acceptable XHTML code:
– changed everything on the widgets, saved it, checked Firefox, and the side bar still disappears on permalink pages…….when I looked further, I discovered that all my
tags had disappeared and automatically gone back to the HTML
– no slash…….So I can’t fix it, apparently, without taking off all my HTML widgets…….and I don’t want to do that, of course…….So, I guess I live with it……….
thanks again
