Blog malfunction
-
Posts I wrote today start to appear, but then they disappear. My most recent post comes in fine. An earlier post I wrote today starts to show up and then disappears. Other earlier posts are listed as published in my dashboard, but not showing up on the actual blog. Across browsers and computers. There’s clearly something wrong going on here with my blog. Help!

What are the titles of these posts? We can’t tell if we’re seeing what you’re seeing until we know what’s supposed to be displayed.
Are they on your dashboard under Posts->Drafts?
Were they scheduled or posted live?
-
Sorry, didn’t realize.
On my dashboard, here are my most recent posts listed as “published” starting from the most recent:
Chart of the day
The gun nuts
The guns the Colorado killer…
More Chik-Fil-A
Dinner at Chik-Fil-A
Penn State
Photo of the day
Science vs. Public. Some of them were published live at the time, others went up on schedule. As of this morning, they were all there. Sometime this afternoon, a bunch seem to have gone missing. Now, everything between the first and last of those posts is just not there on the blog, but still listed as published with the correct date/time on my dashboard.
When one loads my blog in, you can start to see the correct posts start to appear, but then they disappear.

Penn Stateare missing for me. Were they Scheduled? When you put up several posts in one day sometimes they do get scrambled up. Edit the posts and change the timestamp so they are very definitely published in the past, not the future.

Nothing like this has ever happened before. The posts are there when you follow the direct links (including the “recent posts” section on the right), but simply refuse to exist when you load in the blog homepage. Something really weird is going on here.

This is very strange and I’m flagging the thread for Staff attention. You may be able to recover an earlier Post Revision. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/ Go to Posts > All Posts, hover over the title of the post, click Edit and check the Post Revisions module for previous saved versions of the post.
If you’re not seeing the Revisions module while on the editor screen, click Screen Options (top right corner of your Admin page) http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ to activate it. Then select the post and page modules to include them. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules Then you ought to be able to go here > Dashboard > All Posts > Posts and locate the post and recover it from post revisions.
If you cannot locate the post by using the instructions I provided for locating and restoring a post revision, and it’s not in your Trash folder http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/ then you will not be able to recover it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash
Advice:
When you start a new post, add the title, set it to private and then publish it. When you are done with the post, set it back to publish and update it. The problem with posts disappearing when saved as a draft has been around for a while, but only seems to hit a small number of people randomly. The other choice is to get and use an offline blog client such as Windows Live Writer (Windows) or Ecto (Mac) and then everything is saved on your computer and when you are done with the post, you actually publish it directly from the blog client software. See here for offline blog editors so you don’t have to go through this again http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc

Very much appreciate the lengthy advice, but this is not a matter of drafts disappearing, but rather already published blog posts simply not showing up on the blog home page when you scroll down through posts. In my dashboard, the posts show up as published particular times yesterday, and when you click on “view” there is a live, functioning link for that post. Yet, when you just go to the main page, there are several missing.
Okay, now the posts are slowly returning (over the course of hours) one by one, but none of my right-hand widgets are showing up.
-
It could theoretically be a theme issue. I’m not familiar with that theme, but if it allows different post types, some may show up on the main page and some may not. Check the post type (quote, image, showcase, etc etc).
The sidebar issue is a separate one, see here for the cure: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/sidebar-at-the-bottom-and-related-issues/

You had several excess div tags in the “Chart of the day” post which were causing all sorts of trouble. They’re gone now, and the sidebar and posts are back.
-
Thanks so much to all! That post was acting strange when I was working on it. And for future reference, I should probably realize that it is a particular post like that causing problems that I can be on the look out for. Much appreciated.

You’re welcome!
If that every happens again, just check out each post’s individual view, as you’ll lose the sidebar on that too. It’s much easier to find the problem that way.
