Blog Menu Item: Set-up Pages and Categories

  • Unknown's avatar

On my header menu I have 3 items: Blog, About and Contact. The about and contact are set up as pages and work as they should. The Blog menu item is set up as a category and it has subcategories. I have a simple (test) post that will show up under the specified category, but when I select the blog menu item at the top of the website it says there are no posts matching that category. How do I set up a Blog menu item that all posts default to regardless of category? I want the visitor to be able to click that (blog) menu item and it automatically displays my latest post and all the previous ones regardless of category. Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I’ve got that sorted out for you.

Take a look and let me know.

    Hi rootjosh,

I just went to check it out and the same message is popping up when I click the blog header menu item. Should that Blog menu item be set up as a page? Is it because it is set up as a category that is causing the problem?

    Thank you,

Also, I was playing with categories and if I could get the blog header menu item to work, I would most likely delete the -all blog posts- category since that would be redundant-thoughts?
    Thank you,

    HI Brandi,

Should that Blog menu item be set up as a page?

Yes, this would be the best way to go. So, what I would do is publish an empty page titled Blog. Then, go to Appearance > Menus in your WP Admin Dashboard and swap out the Blog category page, with the page you just created. You can also get rid of the All Blog Posts submenu at this time.

Then, go to Settings > Reading in your WP Admin Dashboard and set Front page displays to a Static Page. If you have a static Front page that you want to set as your Home, you can select it there. If not, leave it blank and it’ll just be your Posts page. Then, make sure to set your Posts page as the new Blog page.

Let me know if you have any questions with this!
