  I would like to choose “tomsawyer.wordpress.com” as my blog name. Upon entering this, WordPress tells me “Sorry, that site already exists!”

  Entering “tomsawyer.wordpress.com” in my browser’s URL field yields

  “tomsawyer.wordpress.com is no longer available.
  The authors have deleted this site.”

  What’s going on there?

  Deleted blog URLs are not recycled http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

  However, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

  Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.
