Blog name being used by non-blogger!
-
Hello,
I really want to use this wordpress site name:
http://story.wordpress.com/It has been taken by someone and has not been used for 9 years!! PLEASE can it be released so I can use it. Thank you
-
I see you have already left a comment asking the user to transfer it. That’s your only chance, WordPress.com never recycle blog names and will never take a blog name away from someone however long it has been inactive.

There is no expiration or time limitation on using WordPress.com sites and Staff will not release it to you.
You can try contacting the site owner via the open comment form on that blog and asking them to transfer the site to you.

Hello, thank you both for your replies. I think it’s really sad that this happens. Too many good names just going to waste.
I’ll just have to wait and see if the owner gets in touch with me, although I have a feeling they no longer check their blog..!

I don’t know – you have an infinite number of names to choose from. And some blogs are “memorial” sites, left when the original owner died. Friends and family would be a bit upset if it got taken and given to someone else because of inactivity.

@t-in this case, it’s only the original “Hello World” post and comment by Mr. WordPress.
Given the date of the “Hello World” post (October 23, 2005), potentially it could be one of the first sites Matt and/or Donncha, Ryan or Andy, WPcom’s first staff members, set up here. :)

I’ve just read the wordpress policy on not re-using names. I do think it’s a shame, as many website addresses are re-used without any issues. But I guess blogs are seen as more personal websites? And I totally understand the issue of ‘memorial’ sites. It’s just that this one has never been used – for any blog posts. Nothing at all!
Anyway, I guess I’ll have to give up on this address and find another one! Thanks everyone for their comments and help! -
It’s a classic name for sure –
WP.com has a policy – one size fits all and one can usually find a reason for an exception and make a good argument for the exception, but the policy is what it is.
Some people get a name with grand plans then life happens, others get a blog name because the name means a lot to them (nickname or family name) and they think they might use it at some point.

Note that you can register another .wordpress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade, because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Thanks Timethief! I’m in the process of setting up a new website and domain, so once that’s done, I’ll set to and organise the domain mapping.
Thanks everyone!
