Blog Name Change

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I would like to change my blog address to millenniallearners.wordpress.com (currently millenniallearner). It says that it is reserved, but I cannot find any user or page associated to that address. If you could help me resolve this issue it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    David

    Hi,

The site https://milleniallearners.wordpress.com/ was created on 20 July (my time), and belongs to the account with the username millenniallearners. I presume that account and the website are yours.

When you change a blog address, you have to change to an address that doesn’t presently exist. It seems that you created the new website first, and in a separate account, before attempting to change the old address to the new one. These steps created the problem you are encountering. Accomplishing your goal now won’t be as easy as it would have been had you simply followed the instructions in the Change a Blog Address support page.

If you’d like to speak to WP staff about your present options, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic. Below are a couple of different routes you might take, though I might be missing an easier alternative:

    1. Use the Export and Import tools to move the content of millenniallearner.wordpress.com to the new site, but you’ll have to ask WordPress to move your subscribers for you, as noted in the Moving Your Subscribers support page.

    2. Transfer the new site to the old account according to the instructions provided in the Transferring a Site to Another WordPress.com Account. If you take this route, you’ll end up with a username that doesn’t match the website address. Also, you’ll still need to move the content of the old site to the new one as described in 1. above.

Thanks for your response, however, I don’t believe that is the case.

I originally did follow the Change a Blog Address support page.

How can I determine whether or not the account is mine? I am also adding the modlook tag to the sidebar to speak to the WP staff.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

When a username is created, the matching URL is reserved for that username and no one else is able to register it.

There is already a username in our system, millenniallearners (ll-nn-ll), so the address millenniallearners.wordpress.com can only be registered by that user. There is no way for your account to register that URL.

How can I determine whether or not the account is mine?

If the account is yours, you would have had to register it using a different email address than the one you’re using for this account. You can try inserting that username in the lost password form. If the account is connected to an email address you own you’ll get a password reset email. But we can’t give you any other information regarding that account.

Hmm.. It doesn’t seem as though my email address is registered to that account. However, there seems to be a few things that are odd:

    1) The domain/account was created on the same date that I tried to create it

    2) Nothing has been posted to the domain since it was created

    3) If I navigate to the ‘Contact Information’ section it actually provides the address to the HQ of a company called Automattic, Inc., which is the parent company of WordPress.

Any insight you can provide would be much appreciated.

  • You asked about the site, millenniallearners.wordpress.com (2 l’s, 2 n’s). That site does not exist, but is reserved to the username millenniallearners (2 l’s, 2 n’s). That account was created some time ago.

The site @musicdoc1 linked to is milleniallearners.wordpress.com (2 l’s, 1 n). It’s showing Automattic’s details because it’s pre-populated with demo content – a recent feature that is applied to all new sites.

The fact that no new information has been posted to it is not relevant in this case, as we can under no circumstances transfer a registered site to another user without the current owner’s consent. Even if a site sat empty for 10 years (and there are sites like that) we cannot delete or transfer those sites to anyone else, as they are the property of the accounts that originally created them.

If you are not the one who registered the millenniallearners username account, or the account that owns milleniallearners.wordpress.com, there is no way to gain ownership of those URLs unless you can somehow contact that user and ask them to transfer the site to you.

I see… is there a way to contact that user if there’s no site?

  • There is not, no. We do not give out the email addresses for individual accounts under any circumstances.
