Blog name taken but unused

  Hello,
  I would like to start a new blog but, the name I chose is not available. It was taken in 2006 but no blog posts were ever entered! Is there a way to contact them and ask if they can free up the name?

  If you can find the user and contact them directly, they would be able to transfer the blog url to you using these instructions. Unfortunately, if they did not leave contact info where you can find it, WordPress.com can’t contact them for you. If you are looking for an alternate solution, you could choose a similar url and purchase the domain through wordpress.com, or purchase it through another provider and get a domain mapping upgrade: Domains

  Thanks Lettergrade (great name btw). They did not leave contact information – grrrr! What do you know about .me domains? The name I’d like is available as a .me.

  There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. If you can make contact on your own with the owner of an unused blog then there is a means of a consenting blog owner to transfer the blog to another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

  In the case that there is no contact information Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

  If you are not successful, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

  Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

  Thanks! I think the appropriateness of any top-level-domain (url ending like .com or .net or .me) you might choose is different for every demographic or site topic. I don’t have any thoughts to share one way or the other about .me, but it’s got a certain personality to it and if you feel it suits the feeling of your new blog, then it’s fine. :)
