Blog on search engine has wrong url
-
I’m new to all of this stuff so bear with me. I just bought a domain – myson.com and it also shows up under myson.wordpress.com. On the google search engine, when I type in my son’s name it shows the url as myson.wordpress.com/about. The word “about” on the end of the url does not direct people to the correct site. How do I change that to be correct on the search engine? Again, I’m new to this so layman’s terms please! :) Thanks a bunch!!

I just put http://myson.com/ in my browser and it does not lead to a site here at wordpress.com.
This blog, http://myson.wordpress.com/ has no content (other than the sample post)! So what, exactly, are you expecting the search engines to find? It’s a wonder they even found the about page, since it is also the sample one.
It takes time for search engines to find new blogs, sometimes weeks. Spend some time putting something on your blog.

Sorry you’re in the wrong forum this is WordPress.COM
you need WordPress.ORG -> http://wordpress.org/support/WordPress.com or WordPress.org ? The difference.

Sorry, I didn’t write the correct url. I was just using an example url and I guess I shouldn’t have. What shows up on the google search is http://www.christopherhackler.com/about. Thata takes you to a page that says “error 404.” The correct url to get to the right page is http://www.christopherhackler.com. That’s not what shows up on the google search though. How can I redirect to the correct url from the “about” one that shows up in google? Thanks for any help and sorry for the confusion! :)

I meant to write that the url that shows up on the google search is http://www.christopherhackler.wordpress.com/about. I think the url that I wrote up above gets you to the same destination though. Thanks again.

Okay, I think what you have done is put the domain mapping the wrong way round. If I put http://christopherhackler.com in, I get redirected to http://christopherhackler.wordpress.com (NB. there is no www in the URL). You want it to be the other way around, right?
Follow the instructions in this FAQ: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/
The reason it’s coming up with the About page is, I guess, because of the lack of content on the blog and because it can take a little time for search engines to catch up with new or deleted content. Once you have some posts up, it won’t show the broken link.

The reason why http://christopherhackler.wordpress.com/about comes up with an error 404 is that you have deleted your About page. That page has already been indexed by Google, which is why it shows up in searches. There is no way to redirect http://christopherhackler.wordpress.com/about to http://christopherhackler.wordpress.com/, not on wordpress.com. My suggestion is re-create the About page and fill it with some content.

Okay, thanks. I think I did try to put some info on the About page that showed up and it still had the About info that explains that you can create a post there, etc. etc. It didn’t change. So, that’s when I deleted it not knowing that it still wouldn’t help. Anyway, maybe when I put more info on the page it will help in the searches. Thanks so much for the help. If there are any other suggestions I’m open to hearing them.

If you don’t want the About page you don’t need one. The main thing is to remember that search engines take time to catch up. By putting more content on the blog you will increase your chances of having the blog come up in the search engines in the way you want.
The domain mapping is a separate issue from the cached About page. If you would prefer the site to appear under http://christopherhackler.com, then you need to follow the steps in the FAQ I linked earlier.
