Blog only partially importing from blogspot to WP.com
-
I’ve been scouring these forums for answers, but I finally decided to just plain post, lol.
So, the big picture is that I’ve been on Blogger using FTP and want to move to self-hosted WordPress.org.
Since you can’t import from an FTP Blogger, I moved it over to a temporary Blogspot space.
Unfortunately, my GoDaddy hosting with WordPress.org doesn’t allow you to import from Blogger. I’ve read many posts on here as to why and tried the suggestion to import from Blogspot to WordPress.com and then import from WP.com to WP.org.
So, the importing begins, but out of 459 posts, it only ever imports 59 posts – all the first post of the month, interestingly enough. If I try again, I just get duplicates.
I have tried this at all times of day and night – it does the same thing each time.
Any thoughts as to how to get ALL my posts to go over? Should I import to something else and try going from there to WP.com or .org? Does the fact that my blogger posts have no titles make a difference?
Thank you in advance!

Afraid you’re in the wrong forum and need to be over at WordPress.org. The .org and .com versions of WordPress are different:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700&replies=1And that will obviously affect importing. The only advice I can give you that applies to both forms of WP is to break the whole file into chunks and try again.

You should certainly be able to FTP to your independently-hosted blog. I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to. Or import as XML. Have you checked the forums at WP.org? They will probably have a much better workaround that eliminates the middle .com step.

Thing is – I’m not trying to import to the .org yet – I do realize they are different. I’m trying to import to the .com – hence my asking here. Once I can get it to the .com, I should be able to move it to the .org without problem, but it won’t go to the .com, as described above.

My best suggestion for importing into WP.com is to break it up, as I said, but I’m relatively certain that a more direct way of importing from Blogger to WP.org exists, just that we wouldn’t know about that here. Have you tried exporting and importing as XML?

If you read some of the other threads on either WP forum, GoDaddy hosted sites have a problem with the import because of permissions or firewalls or some such, so it won’t allow it and will just time out.
One suggestion was to try and import into a WP.com and then from the WP.com to a WP.org, but that is where I am having the problem of only some of the posts going over – and there’s no way for me to split it up.
I will look into how to export it as XML, but unfortunately, Blogger has few options for backup on the Mac, or at all, lol.

Ok – I searched far and wide across the internets – and was able to come up with an answer for GoDaddy hosted wordpress.org users trying to import from New Blogger!
The method – going from Blogger > blogspot > WordPress.com > WordPress.org – was correct (because of GoDaddy’s hosting setup, you cannot import directly).
The reason I was only getting one post per month (aka 59 out of 459 posts) when going between blogspot to WordPress.com was that in my Blogger settings under “Archiving” I had it as monthly. To import ALL posts successfully, you must set “Archive Frequency” to “Daily.” I also set Enable Post Pages to Yes, if that information helps someone in the future (I’m not sure if that is necessary but it worked at this setting).
From WordPress.com, I exported the blog to an xml file and then imported said xml file successfully to my wordpress.org space.
Success all around – I hope this helps others in the future!

Thanks for posting your solution. I’m sure it WILL help, and I hope they incorporate it into the FAQs.
