Blog or Website Content?

Although I’ve built a website on wordpress before, it was handed to me all set up and ready to go.

I just signed up for an account and hoped that this would set me up to begin building my website, however it seems the only option I get is to start a blog. Even if I select the option to start a website and not a blog, it still brings me back to the screen to create a blog.

I’m not interested in blogging but building a website for my DAR Chapter. They already have a domain that we must use, and I am simply needing to know how to get started in wordpress to build the website, so I can submit it for approval and have it published.

Can anyone help me and point me in the right direction?

    Thank you!

They already have a domain that we must use,

Sounds like you need to head over to wordpress.ORG for the free software to make your site work.

A blog is a specific sort of web site with both pages and posts. You can certainly make a website using wordpress.COM with only pages so it looks like your standard website. You don’t need to have posts.

But you need to understand your options: you should look at the differences between the two wp.COM and wp.ORG:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

As I said, a blog is a particular sort of web site. Wp.COM is free, but you can map your domain name to point here. And as I said, you don’t have to publish posts which would make it a blog. You can uses only pages. Here is more info about domains:

Thank you. I think I’m learning things backwards! I will try to compare the two and get it done.

We can help you easier if you explain what you mean by “website.” I’m not being facetious; many things are possible here, but we dont’ know if they’re what you want yet.

You are welcome. If you have other questions about the differences or if you can do this or that on wp.COM, then feel free to post them here.

Do like I do – I just tell people I have a web site and skip the part about using “blog software” – nobody really much know the difference – and they don’t really care as long as they get the info they want from your site and your site is easy to navigate – put the news part of your web site into Posts and the static things like who you are and the officers on Pages –

auxclass, I think that might be what I had set up for me before. I worked at a library and built the library website, but the regional support person started me out on that first “page” or whatever and I just added to it. I think you see what I’m going for. It appears, though, that I cannot attach my work to a domain that is already set and need to go through wp.org for that? I really appreciate all the feedback I’ve been getting here. raincoaster, although the idea of “posts” might be kind of nice, I’m really looking for a static website that does just what auxclass was describing with a page for who we are, another page with helpful links, and maybe a final page with a widget that will allow those interested in more information to contact us.

Just map the existing domain name to the site here (I am assuming the domain name is already registered)

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You might also consider the No Ads Upgrade ( $ 30- / year) – WordPress.COM pays for your “free” site by putting ads on your site sometimes – the no ads takes the ads off and that will make your site look more professional

As I said, you can map your existing domain name which you have to a free site on wp.com or pay to host your site somewhere like netscape solutions, go daddy, or bluehost or other then use the free wp.org software to make it work.

    Thanks, 1tess…

Does the wp.org have advertising, because I don’t think that is allowed for our group?

You can pay for a no-ads upgrade as auxclass (above) said. Wp.com places adverts on our sites to keep the service here free.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

Wp.org is the version of wordpress where you pay a host to have your own independent site. So you don’t have ads unless you want them. But it will cost a lot more than $30 per year. Also if you are self-hosting, if something goes wrong you are responsible to figure out a solution.
