blog page set as homepage not working

  • Unknown's avatar

i recently switched the theme of my website (blog style movie reviews is what im going for) since im still waiting on technical support on a glitch from my older theme but if you visit my website, it redirects you to the empty ‘Blog’ page of my website. i want the ‘read reviews’ page to be my main homepage but every time I set that, the entire website glitches back to my old theme. I’ve tried to fix this about a dozen different ways and nothing is working, here’s some info on what I have:

‘read reviews’ as latest posts page, but when I do that then my Blog page goes blank. and I have to set that as my homepage for some reason.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

i want the ‘read reviews’ page to be my main homepage but every time I set that, the entire website glitches back to my old theme.

I don’t think it’s possible for setting the homepage to cause a theme switch, though it may appear to be doing so to you. What effect makes you think the theme is switching when you change the homepage setting?

‘read reviews’ as latest posts page, but when I do that then my Blog page goes blank. and I have to set that as my homepage for some reason.

If you set the homepage to display your latests posts, which can be done by choosing “Your latest posts” at Customize > Homepage Settings > Your homepage displays, then it will do so, but that automatically leaves any other page as a static page regardless of the title of the page. The fact that your page is titled “Blog” doesn’t make it the blog page unless you set it as the blog page at Customize > Homepage Settings.

You may set the page titled “Home” as your homepage, and the page titled “Blog” as your latest posts page as follows:

    1. Choose the page titled “Home” (slug=”blog”*) from the “Homepage” drop-down menu at Customize > Homepage Settings > Your homepage displays > A static page.
    2. Choose the page titled “Blog” (slug=”blog-2″) from the Posts page” drop-down menu at Customize > Homepage Settings.

You must make a selection from each of the drop-down menus for this to work correctly.

    Hi,

thank you for the tips, but this was my issue:

I did as you said which makes complete sense to me, but if you now view my homepage at http://www.filmswithtiffany.wordpress.com, the front page glitches back to my old theme, as you can see. the only way I can avoid this is if I revert back to my original switch with my homepage as my ‘latest posts’ and my blog as a static page, which leads back to my main page being a blank blog page, if that makes sense?

if you don’t mind checking out the page to see the glitch and let me know if there’s an easy fix or any CSS that can fix it, that would be great!

I see that the page is displaying the same problems now as they did when you had the Canard theme applied, and as you described in the topic homepage option selections. However, that’s not a result of the theme switching back to Canard from Gazette. The site still has Gazette applied.

So it looks like the issue is probably not with the themes. I suspect the cause might be a formatting error in the content of that page (https://filmswithtiffany.wordpress.com/blog). I’ll call for staff attention, and staff will respond here.

While you’re waiting for staff to respond you might try to discover such an error in the HTML editor of the page, using some of the suggestions in the HTML Troubleshooting support page. Unclosed div or span tags, for example, may be causing the errors.

the only way I can avoid this is if I revert back to my original switch with my homepage as my ‘latest posts’ and my blog as a static page, which leads back to my main page being a blank blog page, if that makes sense?

That’s not the only option. If the “Blog” page is set as the homepage, the only reason that it is blank is because it doesn’t presently have any content.

    Correction:

“the page is displaying the same problems now as it did when you had the Canard theme applied…”

my original switch with my homepage as my ‘latest posts’ and my blog as a static page, which leads back to my main page being a blank blog page, if that makes sense?

There are two main options at Homepage Settings, regardless of the theme:

    1. Your homepage displays > Your latest posts — If this option is chosen, then no static page is associated with the homepage. The default homepage is a ghost page that only materializes if you choose this option at Homepage Settings. Any other published page on the site will only display its content, regardless of the page title. Title a page “Blog” and it will display a blank page if there is no content in it.
    2. Your home page displays > A static page — In this option, there are two drop-down menus from which you may choose from your static pages, assigning one as the homepage and the other as the posts page.
      • The static page assigned as the homepage will display its content. If there’s no content in the page, then (on some themes, including Gazette and Canard) you’ve got a blank homepage.
      • The static page assigned as the posts page will have its content hidden, if there is any, and will just display the latest posts. It is transformed temporarily from a static page to a dynamic page by the setting choice at Homepage Settings. It takes the place of the default posts page of option 1.

    @staff,

    @tiffanyhue
has encountered the same types of formatting and layout issues on the same page (presently set as the homepage) while using the Gazette theme, as reported in this topic, as she did with Canard, as reported in the topic homepage option selections.

thank you! i managed to make a temporary fix for now that I like. your suggestion to alter the homepage settings helped me somehow format it a bit better as I eventually got rid of an extra page with the blog slug, but if any other issue arises I will be sure to check back for more info!

Glad to help! However, the page https://filmswithtiffany.wordpress.com/blog/ still has formatting errors, and since it’s published and the site is public people may find it via Google and other search engine searches. I suggest you do one of the following:

    1. Change the topic back to unresolved and wait for staff to have a look at that page.
    2. Change the status of the page to draft.
    3. Both 1. and 2.
    4. Delete the page.

Remember, menu items only link to posts, pages, etc. Removing a menu item does nothing to a page or post itself.

This is a known issue in Gazette as well. Our team is investigating it in https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/1780
