Blog Platform

I have a personal blog but I want to take it to the next level to possibly turn it into a business. I’m trying to understand how to do this. I’ve read that the best way for me to do this is to use a wordpress self-hosted platform and then find a host. Is that the same thing as upgrading to the premium plan? If so, can I still use the same domain I already have with my personal plan? I want people to be able to find my blog by doing a google search for the general subject matter. Will the premium plan allow me to do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

I’ve read that the best way for me to do this is to use a wordpress self-hosted platform and then find a host. Is that the same thing as upgrading to the premium plan?

No. These are unrelated to one another. WordPress.com is separate from using the WordPress installation with a hosting company. Take a look at this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and here as well: https://wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If so, can I still use the same domain I already have with my personal plan?

Yes. You own the domain and you can use it wherever you want.

want people to be able to find my blog by doing a google search for the general subject matter. Will the premium plan allow me to do that?

Yes and no. There are many many many components to search engine results. On WordPress.com hosted sites we take care of some of these details already for you.

More information can be found in these guides: https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo/

The entire process of transferring from WordPress.com to self hosted WordPress is outlined step-by-step at move.wordpress.com.

Before you get started I also suggest reading over the Getting Started materials on the left hand side of wordpress.org/support/ This version is much more hands on and you do not have access to a support team.

I’m happy to answer any follow up questions.
