Blog post does not embed correctly in Facebook

  • Unknown's avatar

When I paste my blog link into a facebook post, my wordpress blog post does not show correctly. Instead of my blog post picture and title I get a small box (Facebook) with my blog main title and no picture. Not sure what’s happening. I would give you a screen shot but that’s not allowed for here.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Update: For some odd reason odder posts on my blog show up fine when pasting into Facebook. It’s only the last couple of posts that aren’t posting correctly — No imagine of WP post title showing up in Facebook post.

2nd Update: I cut and pasted a Medium blog post into Facebook and it showed up just fine. So the issue is on the WordPress side. I haven’t changed any settings that I can recall, so I’m not sure why blog title, picture, and opening sentences aren’t showing up when I paste my WP post into Facebook.

I hope someone can shed some light on what might be happening. Thanks.

I am having this exact same problem. Only the title of my blog shows. You can click it on and it takes you to the blog post, but no picture or title shows in Facebook. Please help! I’m also having problems with the Facebook counter, but I’ll ask about that separately.

  • Hi there,

Facebook caches the post preview on their side, and sometimes an image gets stuck in that cache causing Facebook to use the same image for different posts. You can force Facebook to clear their cache by running your post’s URL through their debugger, here:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

We don’t control what shows in the preview. That’s completely up to Facebook. We can just suggest to them which image to use. For best results, make sure you set a featured image of at least 600 pixels wide for the post, or otherwise that the first image in the post is about that size. That is the size Facebook currently recommends to have an image used as a preview when sharing on their end.

You can see this page for more information:

Hello, I’m replying to this thread because I’m having a similar problem. I’ve been searching on the internet and I’ve seen this exact same problem so many times that I think there’s very likely a bug on the WordPress side. Screen capture shared below: I’m at the Facebook URL debugger tool, I’ve refreshed it more times than I can count. The error is

    Could Not Connect To Server
Check that the webserver is running, and that there are no firewalls blocking Facebook’s crawlers.

That’s not a cached image problem. Google search shows many people asking questions about the same error, the response is almost always something about cached images, which I know enough about the Facebook system to know that’s usually the problem when people complain about sharing, but it’s not an appropriate response when there is a clear error message saying “could not connect to server”.

Here’s the link I’m trying to share:

Serenity and compassion in trying times

    Thanks for your help!

We have no control over the images that Twitter, Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

Hi thanks for the reply timethief. (Great name, by the way!) To reiterate, I’m seeing a lot of cases where Facebook fails with “cannot contact server”. It’s not an image cache issue, or even an image issue at all. There’s no image, no text preview, nothing. Did you look at the screen capture I linked to, from the results of Facebook’s debug tool?

Yes I looked at the image but I’m visually challenged. I’m sorry if what I posted missed the mark. Don’t worry though as Staff always return to threads they post into until the issue is resolved.

When pasting the URL in Facebook’s debugger, did you click the Fetch New Scrape Information button? You need to do that to force Facebook to recheck your site and update their cache. I just did exactly that, and your post link is now showing a preview for me if I share it.

Yes, I refreshed it dozens of times over the space of fifteen minutes or so. It was the same error message every time.

Now it is 19 hours later, and when I check the URL with the debugger, it does successfully scrape and show an image.

I just wrote a test post and it did show up on Facebook immediately. So, something was broken yesterday at 1 PM Pacific time.

  • Thanks for confirming it’s working now.

We haven’t had any issues, nor made any changes on our end yesterday, so if there was a problem it was on Facebook’s end.
