Blog post in more than one menu item

    Hi!

I wanted to have blog posts in more than one of my menus, specifically, I wanted them under “News” and Portfolio” (where I will post my projects).
I have tried your Portfolio option but my projects appeared listed under the menu as parent-child menu which I wanted to avoid.
My intention is to have a set of images that represent a blog post describing each of my projects when people click on Portfolio (like this: https://melodydemo.wordpress.com/category/theme-styles/)

Maybe this is also feasible with your portfolio option, but I have not figured out how to do it.
It is not clear to be the difference between blog posts and a portfolio…

I am using the MELODY theme.
    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

You can create the effect of a single page showing a group of related posts by following these steps to link to an archive of all posts in a certain category.

    1. Assign the same category to all of the posts you want to appear on a given page.

    2. Create a custom menu in Appearance > Menus.

    3. Using the “Categories” module to the left of the Appearance > Menus screen, add the categories you want to appear as pages to your menu, and drag to arrange them.

You can review the full details here:

Also, a portfolio is separate from your posts and your pages. It’s a content type that allows you to manage your projects and display them in different ways that is not possible with a typical post or page.

    Thank you!
I think I have managed to do what I wanted.

The problem I am having now is with the image quality of the featured images.
In the menu “portfolio” on my website, when you see all the 6 projects listed, the image quality is great and the pics appear just as I have uploaded them.
However, when you click in one of the projects to enter, the featured image at the top loses so much quality.
I thought this was due to the size of the image and I have been resizing it differently (including the pre-set set of 1400-740 recommended by the theme), but it does not improve quality.
Do you know what I can do to maintain the image quality?

    Thanks!

  • However, when you click in one of the projects to enter, the featured image at the top loses so much quality.

I had a look at your site and noticed that the images you uploaded as featured have a width of 1050, while your theme recommends them to have the size 1400 wide by 740 high. You mentioned you tried that size as well but I do not see those images in your media library.

Even though, I do not see a drop in quality – bear in mind that this may also depend on the size of the screen on which you’re checking the site.

    Thank you!
I tried to change the image size.
Could you check if they are correct now? Please see only the “Portfolio” menu as I have not yet changed the remaining images in the other menus.
    Thank you so much!!

  • Your images look fine to me now, but that’s because the images you’ve uploaded to the media library are 1400 pixels wide or bigger.

I do notice you have some images in your library that are over 3000 pixels wide. That’s much too big for the web: neither your theme, nor any standard computer screen, will show an image at that size. As a 3000px image can be over 3MB big, as opposed to a 1400px image that is only about 700kB, that means you’re wasting more than 2MB of space for every one of those images you upload.

Or put differently, you can upload between four and five 1400px images and use the same space as you use for a single 3000px image, and they’ll show at exactly the same size and quality on your site. Considering your storage space is limited, you might want to pay attention to this.

Uploading images big enough as recommended by your theme is important, but just as important is to optimize your images for the web, i.e., not using images larger than what you need. You can find some more information on this here:

    Optimize Your Images

    Hi!

Thank you so much for your informative reply
I think the large size images are in my Media library but I am not currently using them on the website.
Can you tell me how can I check the size of the image?
This way I can get rid of the images of that size.

I would also like to ask how can I include icons of widgets that are not listed in my Theme? I have started to add some widgets at the bottom of my page but some are without a proper logo. can you help me with this?

The last question: Can you let me know the correct FTP information about my website?

Thank you so much for your help!

  • I think the large size images are in my Media library but I am not currently using them on the website.

Even though you’re not using them on your site, they are taking up the storage space in your media library.

Can you tell me how can I check the size of the image?

In your media library, you can click on any image and then on the button “Edit”. This will open the image in a new tab and you’ll see all the information about the image, including its size.

I would also like to ask how can I include icons of widgets that are not listed in my Theme?

You can see here the list of social media sites that will automatically display their icons in the Social Media:

    Create a Social Links Menu

You’ll also see there that if you’d like to add custom icons, you’ll want to use Text or Custom HTML widget:
