Blog post not showing in Reader

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

After a couple of weeks without problems, the feed for my site http://olaswelt.com seems to be broken again. The old topics are all closed so I had to make a new one. I published a new post today and a bit more than 2 hours later it’s still not showing up in the Reader. I run updates for WordPress and Yoast before posting, maybe this caused a problem? Email notifications work fine though. Could you refresh the feed please?

    Thanks,
    Viola

  • It looks like you are working with a self-hosted WordPress site, so you’ll want to check with your website hosting company or the self-hosted support forums.

Check out the self-hosted WordPress (also known as WordPress.org) support forum at https://wordpress.org/support/

    Hi Melinda,

It is correct that I use a self-hosted site that is connected with my old WordPress.com account via Jetpack. The WordPress reader is a service of WordPress.com so I don’t think my hosting company can do anything about the problems I have and it only occurs for one of my two sites. In the past, it was solved by one of your colleagues as you can see from the tickets below:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/new-post-not-showing-up-in-reader-2?replies=10

I’ve previously been told to let you know when this happens again which I just did. The old topics were closed so I couldn’t reply there.

  • I’m sorry about that! I’m a forum volunteer and wasn’t aware of the issue and I don’t have access to do such a reset.

I’ve tagged this post with modlook so that a staff member can take a look and reset the feed.

Don’t worry about it! Thank you :)

  • Hi there,

I’ve reprocessed your site’s feed and the missing post should be showing now.

We’re not sure what’s causing this to happen yet, but every report we receive gives us more information to help us narrow this down, so thanks for letting us know.

    @melindahelt

If you get reports of posts not appearing in the Reader with Jetpack sites, please go ahead and tag those as in those cases it’s most likely a Reader problem, rather than a site problem. If you want you can make sure the site has a functioning RSS feed first – if the site is online and working otherwise a broken RSS feed is just about the only way the problem would be on the host’s end in these cases.

Thanks for fixing this, the post is there now.

    Merry Christmas :)

  • Thanks for confirming.

And Merry Christmas to you as well :)

    Hi guys,

I’m really sorry to say that but it seems my feed is broken again. Only one week/post later than the ladt time. When I look at the feed for the blog alone in the reader, the new post is there but it doesn’t show up in the feed with the other blogs I follow a few hours later. Can you please refresh it again when you have the time?

Many thanks and happy New Year!

  • Thanks for letting me know. The post should be showing now. I’ve also let our developers know that it has happened again.

Yes, the post is there now. Thans a lot for fixing this again. It’s much appreciated!

  • You’re very welcome :)

    Hi there, it’s me again.

The post I published today, a bit more than 1 hour ago, is not showing in the reader. The previous post, published on January 6, showed up fine so something must have happened since then. Could you please refresh my feed again?

    Thanks,
    Viola

  • Hi Viola,

It should be fixed now, but it’s very strange that this is happening so often with your site, every third post or so, it seems. I’ve mentioned this to our developers so they can take a look.

    Thank you very much, again.

It also seems odd to me that it now seems to happen almost every week, last year it was only every two months or so and I’ve only moved the blog about 6 months ago. Oh well.

  • When you create new posts, do you write them from scratch in the post editor, or do you write it somewhere else and then paste it in? If you’re pasting it in from another source, it could be that hidden characters are being copied that’s preventing the Reader from correctly fetching your site’s RSS feed.

To prevent that, paste anything you copied into a plain text editor like TextEdit on Mac, and then copy it to your site from there. That will strip out any formatting, and hopefully any hidden characters that might be causing this along with it.

Oh, that’s good to know. I always write new posts directly in the editor but occasionally I’d copy & paste small pieces from elsewhere. This was also the case for yesterday’s post for which I copied some names from other sources so it indeed could have been the problem. I’ll keep it in mind and work around it in the future. Thanks for pointing this out :)

  • At this point it’s just a theory, but a worthwhile one to test, I think.

So, it happened again. My previous post published on January 20 went out just fine and showed up in the reader pretty quickly but the post published today more than an hour ago, which is pretty similar and has about the same category and tags, is not showing properly in the Feed Reader again.

The weird thing is that when I use the Reader on my iPhone and pick my blog directly from the list of followed sites, I can see the new post at the top even though the images are not shown there which is the case for older posts as well. When I use the Reader on my Mac, via the browser or the app, only the previous post are shown, including the images.

I might have made the mistake an use copy & paste to transfer some text from a previous post, maybe that’s causing this. Or it was one of the recent updates. Is it possible that my old, now set to private blog olaswelt.wordpress.com is causing this and gets the Reader confused? I’ve been using the current custom domain for years so it shouldn’t be a problem but who knows. Could you please refresh my feed again?

  • Okay, it should be working again now. Thank you for the information regarding mobile vs desktop. I’ve given that to our developers. Hopefully they can do something with it.

I don’t think your old site is causing this. Your old site has a completely different ID in our system than the new site. The problem is rather that the Reader does not refresh the feed for your new site like it’s supposed to. We just haven’t been able yet to pin down why, but there are people actively working on this.
