I had thought that if I posted a blog post it would automatically upload itself to the category that I had tagged it in, but it does not..

You are right, that is exactly what is supposed to happen when you assign a post to a particular category. Do you have a category filter where the post is missing?

A category filter would be something like a category page on your menu, or maybe a category widget somewhere on your site page/sidebar/footer. Any link on your page whereby when you click on a specific category you expect to see all posts that have been assigned to that category. That would qualify as a category filter.
When are you expecting to see the post that you are not seeing, may you please provide a link? How are you trying to determine if the blog post has surely been added to the category ?.
