Blog posts on separate pages?

Hi! I used to use this site around 5 years ago as I wanted to keep a blog, but it confused me a lot and I gave up. Now, I’m back and wanting to use it again but don’t necessarily understand all the jargon when it comes to trying to customize my site the way I want it to be.
Basically, I want to be able to have separate pages where I can categorise blog posts e.g. ‘Books’ ‘Films’ ‘Travel’ things like that. So, say for example, I want those to be the titles of the pages, and then I want to post corresponding blog posts on those pages. Basically, I want everything separate and not just on one page where you have to scroll all the way through a long line of blog posts. Does anyone know how I go about doing this, or is able to sort of outline the steps I need to take? Is this even something I can do on the free version of this or is it a feature I would have to pay for?

  • Hi there,

It definitely sounds like you are wanting to set up category pages:

    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#category-pages-menus

This will allow you to separate each of your blog posts into categories based on topics of your choosing. This is absolutely a free feature and something that you can get set up within minutes.

Please take a look at the link I provided and let us know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

I’m sorry but I’m still very confused – I don’t understand the jargon and this isn’t particularly easy for beginners. On my blog I have made different pages with names such as “theatre” “books” “travel” etc. I did this through the menu section I believe. What I want is: when I make a specific post (for example a book review) I want to be able to post it on my book page and not have it on the other pages. So I want to be able to put my themed post with their connected pages. How do I do this? Is there not any online chat support or a designated person who could help me through figuring out how to make everything work for my site the way I’m imagining?

All posts you create go to the main Blog/Posts page. There is no way round that. Pages are completely different things to posts. You can create pages and keep adding content to them but they may get unwieldy after time.

All you can do to create what you have in mind is to give the impression of different subjects appearing on different pages by following the instructions in the link given above for making category pages. So you’d write a blog post for your regular posts page and give it the category “books”. That post would appear on the main posts page but also on the “books” category page. Those category pages would be reached by viewers by clicking on that particular category you’d added to your menu.

  • Pages are a form of content, like Posts, so they cannot contain Posts.

Instead, we recommend that you utilize your categories https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/ since each category has its own automatic archive listing, like https://perksofbeingizz.wordpress.com/category/theatre-2/

You can add your categories to your navigation menu following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#category-pages-menus

For support options, we only offer the forums for folks on the free plan. We offer email and live chat support for customers on our paid plans with priority email and live chat support for higher plans: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
