Blog posts that were published were somehow trashed and now I have to re-publish

  • Unknown's avatar

I was just viewing my blog site and noticed that I wasn’t able to look at older posts. The further I investigated it seems that pretty much all my older posts were trashed. I had clicked “restore” on all the posts and many of them did restore. Some of the posts were marked as private and are making me re-publish them, which I don’t want to do as they are quite old and everything is connected to different social media platforms.

Is there anything I can do? I know you can mark them public but by doing this makes me have to re-publish the whole post.

    Please help!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The further I investigated it seems that pretty much all my older posts were trashed.

I’ve never heard of posts being trashed spontaneously. It takes a deliberate action by an administrator or editor to send a post or page to trash.

Some of the posts were marked as private and are making me re-publish them, which I don’t want to do as they are quite old and everything is connected to different social media platforms.

I just ran test and found that, as I expected would be the case, when a private published post is sent to trash and then restored, it is restored as a private published post. Therefore it does not have to be published again.

If you are finding that your posts after being restored need to be published, then it would appear that they weren’t in published status when they were sent to trash.

Is there anything I can do? I know you can mark them public but by doing this makes me have to re-publish the whole post.

Changing a published post from private to public visibility does not require republishing it. Changing it from default or “pending review” status to published status does require republishing the post, but if the post was previously published the action will not produce an email or social site notification of a new post.

The Blue Death editor seems to have the “feature” of their Posts disappearing from time to time – Timethief has a nice Post here somewhere on all the places to look for missing Posts

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Is there any chance it could be the theme (Adelle Theme) I am using or did not back-up anything?

I am just reeling as to why this happened as my blog partner and I are the only ones with access to the blog and always ensure our posts are public and double check everything and wouldn’t intentionally trash posts.

When I have restored the posts they all still say “Private”. So I click the edit button and go into the advanced settings toolbar on the left-side and change it to public but in order to effect that change I would assume I would have to save the change or click the “Update” button – which is not available, it only says “Publish”. And at the top-right corner of the page it says the date the post was posted on but says “Privately Posted”, which is definitely wasn’t b/c we had viewers from Facebook and who subscribe to our blog be able to access the blog post.

Do you think this means we just have to bite a bullet and re-publish everything?

I don’t know what the “advanced settings toolbar” is. You can edit the visibility of posts in bulk via the classic dashboard panel at the Posts/All Posts page (yours is https://countrymeetcity.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php).

And at the top-right corner of the page it says the date the post was posted on but says “Privately Posted”, which is definitely wasn’t b/c we had viewers from Facebook and who subscribe to our blog be able to access the blog post.

It’s hard to imagine how one post could have been unintentionally changed from public to private status, let alone multiple posts. But changing the visibility from private back to public does not require republishing. When you change the visibility back to public the status will automatically change from “Privately Posted” to “Published” without republishing. Again, you can make these change with the bulk editing tool at All Posts, or edit each affected post individually if you prefer.

Do you think this means we just have to bite a bullet and re-publish everything?

Definitely not. I’ve described the easy solution above, though I don’t have an explanation for why or how your posts might have been somehow switched to private visibility unintentionally.

Correction: In the last post “changed from public to private status” should have been “changed from public to private visibility.”

    Hi countrymeetcity,

Our records do show that a user on the site has moved the posts to the trash. As you mentioned you have a blog parter but I only see one user on the site. I would suggest inviting each user you wish to have edit the site with their own account. This will allow us, and you, to have a clearer picture of your sites activity.

I would also recommend checking with your blog partner and possibly changing your password if you feel your account has been compromised.

Lastly, regarding changing the status of your posts from private. We do offer a bulk editor which allows you to change the posts status in multiples. See this support document for more on that:
