Blog posts under a 'child page'

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey,

Just trying to get this up and running so I can start publishing content in the correct places. Wondering if its possible to have child pages be the ‘post page.’

Ideally, on my blog I’d like to have a main page where all blog posts would go. But from that blog page, I might have multiple child pages/sections pertaining to different blog subjects.

So it might look something like this

    Words (Menu item)
—-> daily musings (child page relating to one category of blog posts)

–> music things (child page relating to another category of blog posts)

When I create a post, is there a way to direct it to specific pages?

Thanks, sorry if this isn’t too clear

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Assign categories to your posts, and then use links to category pages arranged in a custom menu.

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s great, thank you.
So I was able to make this update as you can see via my site, but how would I now get that post to move off of the main page of “words.” Or will this page “words” just feature all newer posts regardless of the category I put them under?

It will display all posts regardless of category. You may change the page that displays your posts at Customize > Static Front Page, or at Settings > Reading.

You needn’t place the category “Musings” under “Words.” Musings could be a separate top-level item in the menu, rather than a kind of subcategory of Words as it is now. However, if the way it’s set up now is how you want it, then you might wish to amend it by adding links to your posts in the Musings category to the menu structure. Otherwise, the visitor will have to click on the category page link to display the posts in that category.

I totally appreciate the support. I’ve switched the theme of my site now because I find it works better. Just playing around with it..but I’ve noticed on my “pieces of everything page”, it’s only showing my most recent post. For a while it stacked all my posts on top of each other, but I’m not sure what I did, that’s caused it to remove my first post.

    Any thoughts?

…but I’ve noticed on my “pieces of everything page”, it’s only showing my most recent post.

That menu item does not link to a page. It links to the post titled “09/15,” and it’s URL is https://lifeandlines.wordpress.com/2015/09/30/0915/.

The posts page on the site is still https://lifeandlines.wordpress.com/words/. You may change which page your posts display on at Settings —> Reading, or at Customize —> Static Front Page.

  • Unknown's avatar

I notice now that you “Words” page was retitled “Pieces of Everything.” That’s fine, but you’ll need to change the link URL of the corresponding menu item. Either that, or delete that menu item and create a new one with the correct link URL.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmm, I think I may have fixed it..Not sure about the URL and if it will remain a problem/cause any future problems when I’m posting.

So, now under my “My Name is Mony” page, I’m trying to create a grid-like format page. The idea of this page is to create posts, but I realized for the first one “Pink casts and gameboys” I did a “page” because I wasn’t sure if I could make it a post since I already have a “posts” page. And that would be fine, except I can’t add tags, can i?

Hmm, I think I may have fixed it.

Yes, the menu item labeled Pieces of Everything” now links to the posts page.

So, now under my “My Name is Mony” page, I’m trying to create a grid-like format page. The idea of this page is to create posts,

You can easily create a grid page with the Sela theme by assigning a parent page to the grid template, and then creating other pages which are assigned as children of the parent grid page.

However, a “grid-like format page,” containing posts is not possible with this theme. Themes with a grid-based or tiled posts page format, where the images of the grid or tile rows link to posts, include the following:

    • Autofocus
    • Cubic
    • The Columnist
    • Fontfolio
    • Hatch
    • Imbalance 2 (mosaic tiles)
    • Mixfolio
    • Pictorico
    • Spun (circles)
    • Visual
    • …but I realized for the first one “Pink casts and gameboys” I did a “page” because I wasn’t sure if I could make it a post since I already have a “posts” page…
That’s correct. There’s only one posts page per WordPress.com site.

And that would be fine, except I can’t add tags, can i?

In general that’s true on static pages, though I seem to recall that on at least one theme a featured content page can have tags. Portfolio projects can also be assigned tags. The Portfolios support page says:

Along with the Portfolio content type, there are two ways of categorizing your projects: Project Types (similar to [Post] Categories) and Project Tags (similar to [Post] Tags). These are available in the Portfolio menu item and on the Edit Project page.

Also, this is extremely frustrating, because now my Projects on my Pixels page go to an “Oops we can;t find this page”

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s all I can do for tonight. I’ll check on your progress tomorrow. At any time, you may add at “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this post to call for staff attention. The wait time is unpredictable.

Thanks! Look forward to some tips in the A.M. I think I’ve fixed that issue–slowly but surely getting the hang of this. Again, really appreciate you following this thread and lending your wisdom.

Hopefully just a few questions more, and then I’ll be a pro…

    1) Widgets on the homepage–I’ve removed them for now, because I was wondering if there was a way to host 3 widgets that show maybe my most recent posts/projects on my pages. Like have one to show any new pictures under Pixels, one widget to show a post/project under My Name is Mony and a third widget to show new posts under Pieces of Everything

    2) I have two projects under My Name is Mony. I like the way the Gameboy “post” displays the image (it fills the banner). But under the “It started with…” “post” the image stops half way through the banner. Does this have to do specifically with the image file itself, or is it a format-based problem?

  • Hi @illusionarymess, your current theme can feature three pages from the front page. Sela is more for static content, so these would link to static pages rather than category pages, but if that works for you, here’s how to set them up:
    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sela/

Just to clarify, are you hoping to show news-type posts regularly or do you want to have several static pages and show the news and projects as their own separate category?

And I understand you do not necessarily want the latest posts on the front page?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey Supernovia, thanks for the reply/
I ideally I’d like one widget for each of my pages (My Name Is Mony, Pixels, and Pieces of Everything displayed on the homepage. Within each widget it would show the latest post for each of those pages.

I’m slightly confused by the meaning of like static content/vs category pages.

  • So re: static content vs category pages.

Think of posts like news. The latest posts appear first. And you don’t have to organize them into topics, but many people do, just like your own newspaper might have a politics section that’s separate from the arts, but content from either could be featured on the front page. So the Arts or Politics sections would be like category pages in WordPress — you would go there to find all news related to that topic.

Static pages are not like news. Sure, you can edit the content, but it’s not something you’ll be changing often. A Contact Us page is a good example, or a resumé, or even an About Me page. Static pages can have child pages. Or, in the Sela demo, let’s say they offer a few different types of desserts: https://selademo.wordpress.com/page-templates/grid-page/

When I click on “Chocolate Ganache Cupcakes” there, I’m not going to be taken to a topic listing of news all about Chocolate Ganache Cupcakes. It’s just one single page that isn’t going to change much — it’s static. You’ll notice it doesn’t really have a date associated with it either.

    Does that make sense?

Now given all of that, there are ways to force static pages to display posts. It’s just not usually as pretty. If you’re interested in that, let me know and I’ll show you how it’s done.

And lastly, re: your widgets: in this theme, these would link to static pages rather than topics (or category pages). If you’d like, I can show you to display a list of posts under them anyway. Let me know.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, okay so I pretty much get the gist of the static page thing. Thank you :)

So, I guess I’m just trying to figure out what would be the best case scenario for my site. Like given how my site is set up, what things would be good to be displaying on the homepage.

At the moment I changed my About Page to be my home page, because I couldn’t stand a blank home page.

I could try the “forcing static pages” thing, but do you have any other recommendations of what should be displayed on homepages, just in case it doesn’t produce the right feel?

  • So, I guess I’m just trying to figure out what would be the best case scenario for my site. Like given how my site is set up, what things would be good to be displaying on the homepage.

So just to be sure I understand what you’re after, you definitely want to keep this particular theme, right? And you’re hoping to figure out which posts would go well there?

I was just thinking, you could also use the Widget area to link to categories…

  • I’ll set it up on a test site so you can see what I mean. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, I’m thinking the theme works…unless you have other recommendations. I just don’t know if it will mess my site up if I decide to change themes.

I think the widget area thing would be cool, and I totally appreciate all the work you’re putting into this.

  • Sure. So, basically you need to use these steps:

    1)
    – Create some posts in the categories you want

    – Get the link for each category

    2)
    – Upload the photos you’d like to use for each cateogry

    – Get the URLs for each of those photos

    3)
    – Add Image Widgets for each of the three Front Page Widget Areas

    – Paste the image URL into the image url box

    – For the link box, use your category link

It all comes together like this:
    https://testimportvelda.wordpress.com/

And here are a few screen shots of showing where to put the links and what not:

If you need help setting that up, let me know which step you’re on.
