Blog redirect to new website.
-
Hi.
I’d like to redirect our blog (which we set up temporarily while we worked on the website) to our new website.
I had a couple of questions:
1. What is the best way of doing this? Through a plugin or .htaccess file
2. What happens to anyone who has subscribed to our blog? We have a blog area on our new website so will they have to resubscribe to the new site?
Old blog: http://apinchofpsalt.wordpress.com
New website: http://psaltdesign.co.uk
Many thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Psalt,
It’s actually pretty easy to accomplish this, you just have to be careful when you’re doing it so that you don’t lose any of the links you’ve picked up. I also did this about a month ago, and had no issues. Here’s how:
Create an .htaccess file for the old blog, your going to place entries in here to redirect your old blog to your new blog.
The rough format of the .htaccess entries will be:
RewriteRule <old_url> <new_url> [R=301]The
[R=301]lets any search engines know that a permanent redirect is taking place. This will make sure your old linked pages get indexed properly. To populate the .htaccess file with entries I wrote a script to crawl our old blog, and pull out all of the urls our site had – there were about 100ish urls. I then took that list and found the similarities so that I could create the .htaccess RewriteRules.
I setup a sandbox domain so that I could test out the redirects with another script. Once I was satisfied that everything was being properly redirected, I uploaded the .htaccess file to the old website, and manually checked some of the urls to make sure that they were redirecting properly.
I also created a general rule that caught everything that went to the old website and redirected to the new website. This way I could see what urls I had missed when they 404’d on the new site. After 2 or 3 days the 404’s cleared up, and the migration was completed.
In regard to feed subscriptions, I can’t answer how that would work for you. During my migration, my “old site” wasn’t WordPress based, so I didn’t have to tackle that problem.
Hope that all makes sense. If you have any further questions post them and I’ll try to get them answered for you.
Cheers,

Gavin thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed answer.
The one question I do have is how can you access/upload the .htaccess file when WordPress.com does not support FTP as far as i’m aware.
If this is the case I may just purchase the plugin for $12.
Thanks again.

None of gavin’s answer applies to WordPress.COM sites. You have not FTP access here nor can you modify any base files.
There are also no Plug-in’s allowed on WordPress.COM
The site redirect will send all traffic to the new site – I think all your subscribers will need to resubscribe – most subscription programs will not allow you to load a list of email address’s into them as that is a favorite way for spammers to get a new address.

you are right! WordPress.com users have no ftp access to their blogs. You should use Site Redirect upgrade to do so: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

Yeah this is what I found after doing some more searching.
I’ll just purchase the site redirect. Thanks all for your help and clarification.
