Blog requires wordpress login before reader can comment

  • Unknown's avatar

Note received from friend: ” I tried twice to post a comment, using Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, but it would not accept my WP password even though it’s correct and I’d just used it to sign in. I’ll tweet it instead” Another reader wrote me today with “your site always asks me to log into WordPress.com to comment. Not sure why but I haven’t a clue how to sign into WP.com. ” I get many comments on the blog plus plenty of spam and I checked to make sure that the box for require login is unchecked. Any ideas? Thanks, Anita

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Howdy Anita,

Could you pass along an email address from one or both of these individuals so I can do a bit more digging? Please note, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.

Hi Jeremey, I don’t have email addresses from these 2 friends but we all belong to a facebook bloggers group and the other bloggers plus people outside this group are able to comment just fine. If their facebook ids or urls will help they are Billie Frank at http://www.santafenewmexican.com and Patti Morrow at LuggageandLipstick.com Thanks, Anita

    Hi Anita,

I’m afraid I would need the email address that they’re entering into the comment field when they try to comment to be sure what’s going on here. I suspect that the issue is the email address they’re using is either A) associated with a WordPress.com account currently or B) previously was associated with an account. If either of those is the case, they will be asked to login to their WordPress.com account prior to commenting regardless of whether you have this specific setting set for your site. It’s our way of protecting our readers from identity theft.

    Hi Jeremy,
Is there any other way for them to comment without being forced to login on wordpress.com? For example, many people who comment have no accounts with wordpress and don’t need login id’s once they write their name and email. Anita

    Hi Anita!

Currently, you’re requiring commenters to fill out their name and email address. You can see that here (under “Other comment settings”):

    https://noparticularplacetogodotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php

If a user has never had a WordPress.com account, they will not be asked to login.

The issue will only apply to users that either currently have a WordPress.com account setup with the email their using or have associated that email with an account in the past.

The only way around this would be to deselect the option above requiring individuals to input their name and email address.

Hi, If l deselect the name and email option then I wouldn’t be able to see who the comment is from, correct? A-

  • Unknown's avatar

Correct – the user could comment without filling out those fields. It would still appear in your comment section (so some users may fill it out), but it would not be required to comment.

Hi! I unchecked the name and email option and I’ll notify the people who had problems commenting. Thanks for your help! Anita

Hi Jeremy, Thought this solved the problem but I received a 3rd comment after I posted my last email from a reader who has never had a problem commenting before: “I also tried to comment and was forced to log into WordPress.com which I couldn’t do. I then tried via Twitter and received a message that your site was a “security risk and might have been hacked and be trying to steal my details” I managed to bypass the message and post the comment.” Obviously Twitter is a separate issue but I’ve emailed the reader asking for her email if she doesn’t have a problem with sharing it. I’ll be in touch about that but do you have any other ideas? Anita

    Hi Anita!

While the email field is not required right now, it’s still available for readers to use when commenting. I’m betting that the reader entered an email address associated with a WordPress.com account and was asked to login. If you could pass along the email though, I’ll be able to know for sure!

Hi again. It’s (email visible only to moderators and staff) . Thanks. Anita

    Hi Anita!

Yep – the issue is that email address is or has been associated with a WordPress.com account in the past. If they use that when commenting, they will be asked to login to WordPress.com. There isn’t a way around this at the moment.

So, should I leave the email settings unchecked for email and inform these commenters not to enter their email? A

So, should I leave the email settings unchecked for email and inform these commenters not to enter their email? A

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep – that’s going to be the only way they can comment without signing in if they’re using an email address that has previously been or is currently being used at WordPress.com!

Hi Jeremy- This issue still isn’t resolved! I belong to a blogging group and two people today have been blocked from commenting and say that they have to log in. I have unchecked my settings but, obviously something has changed in the last 2 weeks as I’ve had no previous problems with comments including those by WP users. The 1st comment today says “I tried to leave a comment but it wanted a password saying I was signing in from somewhere else. . .I tried. Beautiful photos.” Can you check the settings I have and tell me what I’m doing wrong and why this worked 2 weeks ago and will not work now. Obviously, WP users shouldn’t be blocked from commenting (I’ll lose half of the discussion as least!) but I can’t ask everyone in my group for their email address either…FRUSTRATED! Thanks, Anita

    Hi Anita!

Could you pass along the email address(es) of the individuals that are having trouble? I’m afraid if it’s the same issue, there isn’t much we can do.
