Blog Search Based on Content
-
uh..newbie, so pardon my ignorance. is there a search function for WP blogs based on content? er..not to plug Blogger but..it has such a thing. input word/topic/whatevah and *poof* ..a listing of blogs about that subject. also, any internal search functions based on blogger data..like age, gender, location, interests…etc.
THANKS!

Yes and no.
No, because, as far as I know, there isn’t a page on WordPress.com where you can explicity search for content.
Yes, because you can search in a few ways:
- If you go to wordpress.com/tag you can see any posts that WP.com users made with popular tags
- Also, you can look at tags that aren’t so popular. For example, if you go to wordpress.com/tag/poop you can see all posts that people tagged with the word “poop,” even though, unsurprisingly, that is not a popular tag
- WordPress.com tags are also Technorati tags, so you can search by tag or by content at technorati.com. I don’t think that you can filter out only WP.com blogs, but if you’re searching based on keywords, you’re probably not looking for anything specific to one blog host anyway
- The “links to this post” feature is apparently powered by Google Blog Search, which suggests that most WP.com blogs are indexed by GBS. Using this search engine, you can filter out domains. So if you wanted to search for posts containing the word “poop,” you could use the query
poop site:wordpress.com, which would give these fragrant results.

I too am interested in the answer to this is there a way to search wordpress blogs by subject and interest question. And, if there isn’t such a search function I’d sure love to see one developed. :)

thanks drmike. helps to some extent but a dedicated feature or utility would be way cool…i’m just saying.

Agreed but with the tag system and fine tunning the Search Engines, that’ll get you started.

I think it’s better to use Google Blog Search — blog search updates by crawling RSS feeds and it’s updated more frequently. The Google Blog Search algorithm is based on keyword relevance and not link popularity.
For example, a long time ago I started a WordPress.com blog that I forgot about (freecomputing.wordpress.com). If you search for
free computing site:wordpress.comon Google, you get nothing. If you do the same search on Google Blog Search, you see an index of all of the posts on that Blog. -
I think it’s better to use Google Blog Search
Agreed but it was kicking back an error and I didn’t want to send anyone over there until it got back up and running. :)

certainly appreciate the response but wasn’t impressed using Blog Search. still difficult to narrow things down to just WP blogs. or get terribly specific in search parameters. but it is something. the old..’something is better than nothing.’ who knows maybe somebody will develop a search mechanism specifically for WordPress that could sift through even the trite A/S/L. LOL..
thank you!

Well to get just WP blogs, you have to use the ‘site:wordpress.com’ in addition to your search terms. It’s mentioned above as well as in my link. :)
