Blog Stats for Posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I looked in the Support documentation but could not find the information I’m looking for.

My question is, how can Blog Stats be tracked for individual posts? There are multiple posts per category page. And each post is shown in its entirety. So unless someone clicks on the comments, there’s no way to know if a certain post has been read.

Under what conditions can the traffic to an individual post could be tracked? Does a post need to be excerpted?

Thank you for any information. :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    unlading,
Please provide a link to your blog, starting with
    http://

That’s weird. It auto-populated the URL when I filled out the form.

    http://unlading.wordpress.com/

That is an screening system so that people with wordpress.ORG will realize they are in a wp.COM forum. It should post the URL, in my opinion, but I’m only a volunteer.

    Anyway:
dashboard >blog stats > under ‘top posts and pages,’ ‘referrers,’ and so on, there is a list of your posts. To the right of each post title, you’ll see an icon which looks like a graph. Click that and you’ll see how many hits you got for that post.

Is that a static front page on your blog? Do you know that you can make “To read about the blog, select a Page” and “To read the content, select a Category” clickable links? You could even make a list of each category a live link.

In #2, here is how to link your name to your blog:

    Thanks for your reply!

    I guess I should’ve read those 8 things more carefully. :/

Yes, I know I can do links on the page, but then it’d be redundant with the sidebar. Hmmm. It’s difficult to get things “just right” when you’re using the free service and can’t modify the CSS. :)

Yes, I know how to view the stats for posts, but my stats are all zero. It makes sense that they are all zero, because all the posts are shown in their entirety, and there are multiple posts per category. Therefore, no one has to click on anything (except the Category title) to read a post. I just wanted to know under what conditions stats would actually be collected. Would the post need to be excerpted or split in order to force someone to click “Read More” or something similar?

Oh, I guess they can click on the perm link in the title of the post.

To get things “just right” just means you have to outsmart the constraints. ;-)

You could use “read more,” or set your posts to show 1 per page. In my opinion, the more tag would be the more attractive, but you could use both: set pages to display to only 3 or 5. Then more tag would force readers to click on a post with an intriguing first sentence or paragraph.

As to being redundant, you never know where a reader will look. It’s only costing some (free) digital ink. I guess when I first looked, I thought for sure “To read about the blog, select a Page →” would be clickable. I see you’ve changed the colors there to look more sophisticated.

I’d also turn off the comments on the front page and put up an attractive picture there that would make your readers want to see more of your articles.

Yes, I’ve been tinkering with the front page, and at this point I’m ready to do an overhaul. I’m thinking of trying other themes and/or doing everything via links.

Ah, the “more tag.” I knew I must be missing something rather obvious. Now I feel stupid. *lol*

Thanks so much for your help! WordPress is lucky to get so much free assistance from volunteers.
