“Blog Stats” keep weirdly fluctuating. Explanation, please.

O.K., I’ve been putting this off a few weeks, but it gets ever more maddening so, here’s the question:

For the past several weeks when I check my “Blog Stats” I get these inexplicable fluctuations in the number of “hits” on my site. For example, over the past several hours my today’s “hits” bar has gradually crept up from the high 20s, to the 30s, through the 40s and hit 50 a few minutes ago. *But*, it’s also gone from 29 to 27, from 39 to 33, from 48 to 34, etc., etc. Now I very well know if 34 people have clicked on my site, then a minute later that number’s NOT reduced to 29 . . . one can’t “unclick” a site one’s already clicked on.

Often as not there’s not even agreement between the daily hits bar graph and the “Today’s Visits” number just below the graph.

This is getting somewhat maddening. Could someone please explain? By the way, this is something I’ve noticed only in the past 3 or 5 weeks.

    Thank you.

Heh heh — about 10 minutes ago I had 51 hits today according to “Site Stats.”

“Refreshed” about 2 minutes ago . . . now it’s 44. So 7 people climbed into a time machine and “undid” their clicks?

    Funny.

We can’t help you or give you any guidance without the URL of your blog, starting with http. Also, have you seen the three or four other threads on this issue today in the forum?

Sigh . . . I thought that was in the post. Plus, you know my name is “letsjapan.” Now let’s work this out logically: http://www. (<- we know that’s gotta go in front) letsjapan. (<-a wild guess, eh?) wordpress.com (<- another crazy wild guess).

    Wallah! http://www.letsjapan.wordpress.com

There is no “www” at WordPress.com – Wallah! again

    Eyes roll.

So, then, it was even *easier* than what I said.

By the way, I use “www” out of habit, and even direct people to my site using
it, as many people (non digit geeks) think an addy looks strange w/o it. And,
of course, it takes you to the site (using “www”) just the same, just as pretty
    as you please.

Hi. As per this thread raincoaster was pointing you to, among others, you need to report your stats issues to staff by following this link:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

This being said, volunteers don’t have access to that box where you entered your blog’s URL. And you’d be surprised by the number of people whose username does not match their blog address.

If you want to avoid the hassle of giving out your blog’s URL again, it’s easy. Go into your dashboard > Users > Personal Settings > Account Details > Website > Save Changes.

    And voilà! (not wallah :-)

    Gad.

    Just forget it.

I’ll just live with “Site Stats” that say 60 hits one minute and 45 the next. It’s a glitch in the WordPress software. I don’t feel like going round and round with people lecturing me about the proper protocols on doing my address in a forum. I was hoping I could just get a general answer, like, “Yeh, we’ve been having that problem a lot lately. Some fur ball in the software. We’re working on getting that straightened out.”

    That would’ve been fine.

    P.S. – but thanks anyway.

You can get a general answer like that by referring to the search box on the forum which will lead you to the other threads.

@letsjapan, you are the one that turned things snarky. The problem is that few people’s username matches their blog URL anymore, and many have more than one blog so how are we to know?

Stats issues as airodyssey mentions have to go through staff directly because the volunteers in the forums don’t have access to your account or any of the back end files, logs, reports and whatever. We have no magic connection to staff and they basically don’t tell us anything.

Well, the bottom line is that I asked what I thought was a simple question and rather than either (a) a simple answer or, (b) an answer to the effect of “Hmmm, good question, don’t know the answer, why don’t you check out _____________,” I got a lot of haughty, supercilious, lecturing.

I didn’t, in fact, turn things snarky. I responded to rude people.

    Thanks. Don’t bother anymore. Please.
