    Hey there!

There is a difference between tags and keywords. Keywords are words or phrases used inside the content of your post that help search engines identify what your post is about, while the tags are used to find things inside the blog and tell the readers what your post is about.

Keywords cannot be added the same way you would add tags. However, you can choose one main keyword and two or three keyword variations for each post and use those throughout the post to tell search engines what the content is about.

The use of tags is optional, but they definitely help group related posts together and make it easier for people to find your content. However, it’s important to use the most relevant tags for the content you are writing. Here’s a great help doc you can check out if you want to learn more about tags:

I believe tags are indexed by search engines, but I am not 100% sure. To confirm this, I am adding the modlook tag to see if someone from Staff can give us more insights on this.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi, Tags and Categories in WordPress are different from meta keywords (which Google ignores, last I read).

People tend to use WordPress tags and categories for organizing their sites and linking related articles. For example, if you were a recipe blogger, you might have categories for main courses, side dishes, breads, snacks, and desserts. You might also use tags like “gluten free” on some recipes regardless of category. Does that help?

Tags and categories together work in our reader as topics:
    https://wordpress.com/support/topics/

People who are following those particular topics or viewing them on a given day will be more likely to see your article. You’ll want to avoid adding too many topics to a single article to avoid ending up in a spam filter.

Also, if you’re looking for SEO advice, we have some here:

Does that help? If you have more questions, let us know.
