Blog url is misspelled how do I change my blog url without loosing my work?

  • Unknown's avatar

Someone else registered the wordpress account… I built the wordpress blog page and have already gotten several folks to sign up and have put a lot of time into postings… believe it or not I JUST found that the url has a misspelling in it. I think my mind was just filling in the missing letter… I would like to correct the wordpress url without loosing all of the work I’ve done to build the site and its membership and I really don’t want to keep using the url with the misspelling. What can I do to replace the misspelled wordpress url with the correctly spelled url?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi! Just follow the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Let me know if this helps!

One thing to keep in mind that I forgot to mention:

If anyone has your old site bookmarked in their browser, that bookmark won’t take them to your new site once you change the URL. To have your old site redirect to your new one, you’ll need to purchase the site redirect upgrade, which will automatically redirect traffic from the old site to the new one.

    Info on that here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
    and here:
    http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/redirect/

M5mason – thank you for the info… when I follow the steps you outlined everything goes great except… the blog page that I want to change doesn’t offer the ‘change blog address’ or ‘transfer blog’ as the other blogs I have do… instead the only option that appears is ‘leave blog’…

Were you on this page? https://tcuxchange.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs

If so, can you share a screenshot of the page where your only option is “leave blog”? It will help to actually see what you’re seeing.

m5mason – yes, the link you listed is correct. You’ll notice that the misspelled “tcuxchange” does not have the ‘change blog address’ or ‘transfer blog’ options…

    The blog page – https://tcuxchange.wordpress.com

    should be: https://tcuexchange.wordpress.com

The “E” in the word exchange is missing… when I realized this today I created the tcuexchange.wordpress.com (with “E”) blog page with the proper spelling.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks…

I can’t access the link I posted for you — only you can — so I can’t see what you mean. That’s why I asked for a screenshot. I don’t think I’ll need one anymore though, because I think I know what’s going on.

You mentioned in your first post that someone else registered the WordPress account and you built the blog. From what I gather, you’re not the site admin and your account doesn’t have the authority to make this change. It sounds like you’ll have to have the person who registered the account make the change for you.

Anyone else care to weigh in on this? I’m not 100% sure if this is correct, but it’s my best guess.

m5mason – You were correct… my colleague registered the account but even though we were both admins on the account since she had registered it I didn’t have the ability to ‘change blog address’ or ‘transfer blog’. She used the ‘transfer blog’ function to ‘fully’ transfer the blog to me and now I can see the change and transfer functions… BUT when I first discovered that the url was misspelled i stupidly created a blog url with the correct spelling… NOW the system won’t allow me to ‘change blog address’ of the misspelled url account to the existing and correctly spelled url. IF I were changing the blog address to a new url it would work but since it is an already existing url its’ not working… any other thoughts or suggestions? (I can’t attach my screenshot:( )

Hmm… I don’t have a good answer. I’ve tagged this thread for staff support — this may be something they can fix for you.

  • You can’t change a blog address to an existing one, but you can export/import the contents via the Tools section of each blog’s Dashboard. :)

Is it possible for the WordPress staff support to delete the corrected blog url that I set up (http://tcuexchange.wordpress.com) from behind the scenes. So that I can just use the ‘change blog address’ function to transfer from the misspelled but built out blog http://tcuxchange.wordpress.com… I want to avoid requiring all of the folks I have invited and who have accepted to be authors on the misspelled site to be re-invitedto the rebuilt site… most of the folks in the community I’m using the blog for aren’t particularly tech savvy…

BUT when I first discovered that the url was misspelled i stupidly created a blog url with the correct spelling… NOW the system won’t allow me to ‘change blog address’ of the misspelled url account to the existing and correctly spelled url. IF I were changing the blog address to a new url it would work but since it is an already existing url its’ not working… any other thoughts or suggestions?

Deleting a URL means it is permanently gone. Deleting and then re-creating is not possible.

  • Raincoaster is correct, the only option here is to just export/import content.
