    why does my website not publish? and only my blog does?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    A blog is a website!!!

    It is a specialized sort of website where you can continuously add the most current information for your readers / customers to see. It is very easy to connect to other social media such as facebook, twitter, and others.

    But you can use WordPress.com to set up a traditional page based site. Please read this article: http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/

    As a one week wp.com user, I’d recommend that you work through this tutorial to get acquainted with this platform:
    http://learn.wordpress.com/
    It will be very worth the time you spend!

    What is the URL of your “website” that does not publish?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @auxclass,
    It appears to be http://rcubed3dotcom.wordpress.com/

    @vbkj4321,
    There seems to be a menu widget on the right sidebar. Not sure if the Fruit Shake theme has a top navigation menu—looks like it does not: http://fruitshakedemo.wordpress.com/
    so that may be part of the confusion with making the site look more like a traditional page-based website. Another theme, which displays a top navigation menu might be easier for vbkj4321, the original poster, to use.

    Many many themes available on WordPress.com offer a built-in top navigation menu. Links to pages would appear on top so the site would look like a more traditional page-based website.

    Using a custom menu with one of those themes would also give more control over what appears up top for readers to navigate:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
    What you have now is more like this menu widget:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/

    @vbkj4321,

    In the right sidebar you have these links now:
    About
    Blog

    • (This is your current home page, which is set as your blogging page)
    • If you want a different landing page, the page readers see first please read this: Setting up a Static Front Page

    Contact
    Welcome

    Those pages are showing in the right sidebar in alphabetical order. If you are happy with your menu on the right side column but you want them in a different order than alphabetical, then use a custom menu for that widget: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

    @Tess – it almost sounds like they might have two sites so that was my reason for asking – but if they have only one – then your extra info should get them going in the correct direction

  • Unknown's avatar

    @Mike—Thanks! You may very well be correct, but the OP is only 1 week old. I think it’s just a matter of the quirks of that theme and inexperience with this platform.

    At any rate, we all will make sure that we are here to help if there is a problem with a second website.

    Or further questions about how to proceed.

    Typing / texting is not always the most accurate way to communicate… I’ve been away so much and I’ll admit that “Fruit Shake” is not a theme I’ve had much experience with—I think not ideal for a traditional page-based website, though…

  • Unknown's avatar

    The theme the OP has is one I find a bit strange – and it took me a while to figure out my antique one that I use on my site – I admin a site for some friends and am thinking about updating the theme to have a nice header picture –

    Fruit Shake is an older theme:

    Our 119th most popular theme.
    Launched on July 5, 2011.

    So it doesn’t have all the featured images, responsiveness, and other bells and whistles the newer themes offer. They have updated it a bit, but it looks like it would not be the best choice if you wanted to show a page-based traditional website.

    There are so many new themes, each with its own styles and quirks. I have experimented with some of them, but it’s become such an individual choice because of the many options that it’s so confusing now. I don’t know how a new user on WordPress.com chooses a theme!

    Sometimes I feel as though I’m shopping with my hubby for socks. He can spend an hour choosing a pair: they all look the same to me, but he sees the different options of fabric content, elastic tops wide or narrow, toe re-enforcement, color (aren’t men’s socks all black? or navy blue?), thickness, thermal insulation, sweat absorption, washability, and only god-knows-whatever-other-options there are. Then he buys one pair and of course the washer or dryer “eats” one sock, so (we) he goes sock shopping again… Making a choice is so personal!

    As far as updating the theme for your friends, I’d choose one where you can have different fun headers on different pages. I like variety. But others like consistancy… big header? small header?

    As for the OP, a menu in the sidebar for a site he or she wants to look like a traditional page-based website, IMO, Fruit Shake is not the optimal choice.

    My site I have one picture for the header and I use that same image for the web site business card

    Friends have retired and off sailing – thinking about a header image with their boat – them and maybe a third in a collage of some sort – want to keep it simple but jazz it up a bit from the night sky with stars that the theme has now The Regulus Theme. – works OK – one of these days

  • Unknown's avatar

    I like your header. But the bright blue background would be nicer if it were either darker or lighter. (IMNSHO— ≥^!^≤)

    I don’t think you’d have to change themes for your friends’ site. Regulus will support a custom header even though it’s been retired. Do you have software to make a collage to size?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes I have software to make a custom collage – a couple of ways to do it – need to find the notes on the couple of themes I was thinking about

    thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

    Is darker now – thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for all your comments. I figured how to publish and am now clear on the blog vs static pages. I was hoping to upload a photo onto the section of the theme where there is currently a photo, this is why I chose the Fruitshake theme – I liked the page location of the picture. However, I do not think this is a doable option within the limits of a free theme with WordPress.

    @vbkj4321
    I’m not sure what you mean:

    I was hoping to upload a photo onto the section of the theme where there is currently a photo

    There are lots of free WordPress.com themes which allow users to display photos such as featured images for each post, or to have changing pictures on your header. Can you describe what you envision a bit more clearly? Truly, the free themes on wp.com allow a huge amount of variety!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I changed the theme on my website rcubed3.wordpress.com. I then uploaded an image (the white cube) into the header. I would now like to delete this image and I cannot figure out how to do this. I go into appearance and themes and customize – the only thing the program allows me to do is add another image. I even deleted this image from my Gallery.

    As far as my original question goes, when working with the free themes, and that has theme already contains an image, based on several attempts, I have found that the image within that theme cannot be changed to another image. Maybe this only works with a ‘paid’ theme or upgrading to custom.

    thanks!
