Bloggers able to add personal themes

  • Unknown's avatar

I was thinking that bloggers on WordPress.com could add their own personal photos to use as their theme and they could customize the whole layout. If people could personalize their sites, then more people might sign up for WordPress.com. Please consider my idea :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m so sorry but I’m afraid that you do not understand some basic things about this wpMU (wordpress multiuser) blogging platform, which runs on completely different software from what you are accustomed to at Blogger (blogspot).

The only themes we can use are located here > Appearance > Themes. All of those bloggers who use the same theme are, in essence, using the same underlying template. We cannot access or edit themes or templates, only Staff can. The reason for that is clear. Whatever edit is applied affects all blogs using the same theme.

However, there are several themes that do alow us to upload background images. You can use the  Search Utility and Feature Filters in your Dashboard > Appearance >  Browse Themes >  Feature Filters to locate themes that allow for image backgrounds.  (A-Z, Popular,  Features)

Each theme has a thumbshot and a features summary description. You can browse and when you find one of interest  you can click “Preview”. When you are ready to make your selection you can  click “Activate”.

    Best wishes with your blog.

They more or less can, IF they are good at CSS coding and purchase the upgrade. In order to tell if your CSS skills are good enough, use the free preview. When you can get it looking the way you want, then and only then buy the upgrade and apply the code.

You can add your own photo – many headers allow that – can do that in probably all sidebars – you can do the CSS upgrade and really make your site different – many Themes have the ability to customize the look.

    Not all that limiting –

I communicate with blogspot bloggers on a daily basis re:blogging ssues. IMHO and although I could be wrong what the OP is asking for is the sma ability one sees here. > http://bloggerindraft.blogspot.com/2010/03/blogger-template-designer.html

Yes, and it’s been responsible for a lot of creations that should have been stillborn. That’s why I like to explain it in challenging terms: only the truly dedicated will work their way through CSS for this.

Hmmm … then maybe post this. ;)

If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    Not intimidating enough, TT!

Either explanation seems adequate to help the original poster decide if purchasing a CSS would be a good idea to explore.

It’s an idea. We are not here to say, “Yes, it’s a good idea.”

From timethief’s link I doubt that WordPress would ever make a theme with these warnings:

    Miscellaneous Notes
The Template Designer is not supported on Internet Explorer 6, nor, for that matter, are the new templates. While we’ve made an effort to ensure that they’ll still be readable, the new designs are not going to look particularly attractive on IE6. We strongly encourage the very small number of bloggers and readers still using IE6 to upgrade to a more modern browser. For more information about browsers, visit Google’s What Browser? site.
The rounded corners and drop shadows used in several of the templates may not be visible in older versions of some browsers. Opera users will need to wait for Opera 10.5, currently in public pre-alpha release. IE7 and 8 users will not see these effects within the Template Designer, but will see most of them on the live blog itself.

The other thing, just for the OP’s edification, is that the themes here are written in PHP script, not HTML, so even if we could edit or add templates, it is far more difficult than a little HTML.
