blogging as separate entity

  I have a wordpress website, ‘licenseplateroom,’ currently under the free version (though I plan to purchase a personal plan or possibly down the road, a premium plan). In a few months I am going on a big road trip and want to keep a blog about it. However, I want it to be its own stand-alone entity. In other words, I don’t want it to be a section under licenseplateroom. Do I just purchase another domain? And if I want both the website and the blog to have a custom domain name, would I then have to pay for each separately?
