Blogging awards
-
I got an email telling me a fellow blogger had mentioned my blog in his. I followed the link and see that he has included my blog in his list of nominees for the awards that he had just received. This awards nomination stuff is all very new to me. Can someone please explain it to this newby? Thanks!

I hope you understand that blogger created memes like blog awards aren’t created or sponsored by WordPress.com and no value other than sentimental value.
New bloggers tend to get caught up in award exchanges and experienced bloggers avoid them like they avoid the plague. New bloggers love them and post as many as they get. :)
An award is an image and you can add it via the Image Widget. You will need the URL to the image. See Image Widget: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/ You will need the URL to the image.
Added information: If you cannot get backlinks naturally by having bloggers recognize your authority in your niche based on the outstanding value of the unique content in your posts, you can always create a blog award meme to get some (even though Google will ascribe little value to the links). You can create a badge and a list of things to do and award them to friends. More information here http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2013/05/14/make-a-free-award-event-or-website-badge/

Thank you for this clear explanation, Timethief, and for taking the time to reply with useful links!
I thought that the purpose was to get one’s new blog a little more exposure. I didn’t know that these were just fun things that people make up and that they are of minimal value

It will provide more exposure because everyone withing the circle of bloggers who present awards to each other will visit your site but that does not mean they will be focused on the same blogging topics you are focused on.
Those who want some traffic but who don’t wish to post the badges/awards on their front page either (1) because the are unrelated sites, or (2) because they can create an amateurish site appearance can create a Page https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ titled Awards and embed all the awards on it.
For uploading images into posts and pages see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/adding-images-to-posts-or-pages/
Here are more details about the options for uploading images http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/One more note of caution is that accepting an award means you have to set your editorial calendar aside and publish a post triggered the acceptance. Then you will have to publish a post on a topic you may not wish to have on your site and compel several other bloggers to do the same thing. Think “chain letter”.

Again I thank you for enlightening me.
I am working on establishing my editorial calendar, as you call it, and already feel the pressure to produce a quality posting as I continue to learn the intricacies of WordPress and my Theme. Thank you for the links. I have been wondering about creating a second page and I believe you have just provided me the answer. There is so much to learn and tweak at this stage. I think I will just leave the Award with a polite “thank you” to the nominator.
