Blogging in WordPress but hosted by Wix

  • A CNAME is better for creating a subdomain, but an A-record could also work. Preferably you’ll need to add two, though, with the two IPs I gave you above.

In either case, for the Host, you’ll add in the subdomain you want to use, with the IP address or your WordPress.com address in the second field, usually called Alias or Target.

Ok..this is what I have done thus far:

    1. purchased my own domain/personal from wordpress. Mapped it.
    2. I added one of the IP addresses in the A Host. Only room for one.
    3. As far as a CNAME goes, currently there are two slots available in WIX to add/change anything. This the string there right now is

    www204.wixdns.net

    the same in both slots.

Should I replace that with one of your name servers??

Am I on the right track? WIX’s directions are horrible!

    Anyway..thx again.

One more questions. I see now that the personal account on wordpress does not include SEO capability. What good is a blog without SEO capability?? Did I just purchase this package for nothing??? Not happy :( . Might as well have just stuck to WIX’s blogging since SEO is included in my premium pkg. Can I get my money back at this point???

No, for the CNAME, change the Host or Name field, the first box, to what you want your subdomain to be, so, “blog”. In the Alias field, the second box, you need your WordPress.com address, so araiofstitches4u.wordpress.com

But it appears to be working with the A record you added so I’d recommend you leave it as is for now. Having both the A record and CNAME might cause problems.

Thx about the refund info and about the SEO info and yes, reason I wanted to do this in the first place was that I read that you guys are great for SEO, but then I thought I had to pay for it. At this point my shop is so small and not sure if it will even take off, so didn’t want to put too much into it at first. I’ve already put so much into it..ya know. Baby steps I guess.

    DNS Records
Host Name blog.araiofstitches4u.com Points to 192.0.78.24

    CNAME (Aliases) + Add another
    Host Name#1 m.blog…….com Points to www204.wixdns.net

Host name #2 www . blog.araiofstitches4u.com . Points to the same

I’m using blog.araiofstitches4u.com as the subdomain. I’ve mapped it in wordpress already.

This is what appears on my subdomain info in Wix. Right now, when I click on the subdomain name in Wix it goes to my wix website. so I guess this is correct?? So, when people see my blog what happens. I started created my blog page and put some links and I know those will go to my website, but what else. Sorry…this is all new territory for me.

thx for all of your help. I do appreciate it!

Oh…when I type blog.araiofstitches4u.com into the address bar, my website shows up?! I’m so confused..sorry.

  • Unknown's avatar

I did what you advised…host name is my blog……..com. In the CNAME fields, two of them, I changed it to m.mydomainname.wordpress.com and did the same for the second field under CNAME except with a www.

This is how wix has it set up.

    The A host (blog.araiofstitches4u.com
CNAME: m….. & www. (you can’t change this) . But I was able to add as above.

    Sorry for so many posts..errrrr.

  • Okay, it looks like it’s working now. The m. CNAME at Wix is probably for a mobile site, so I’m guessing they use the CNAMEs for the site with them, rather than for pointing to a site somewhere else. But if it works, and your Wix site also works, then I’d leave things as they are from here on out :)

I don’t think it’s working. I put blog……..com in the address bar and it goes to my website. How do I see the blog as if I was another person browsing?

@kokkieh. No offense to you at all, but I am so frustrated. you have been only helpful but I’m just not getting it. I’m sitting here again, about 3 days in a row banging my head on the table to set this up. I ran into something else on the wordpress site that I have questions with. Also, now, when I’m in my account, all work that I put in there yesterday, “about” section and “contact” section, is missing. I can’t find it and anytime I hit anything, a screen to purchase the biz package pops up and I can’t do anything. I’m so confused. Is there someone that I can speak with to walk me through all of this and get this handled once and for all?!

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok..I called up wix. Everything is set up correctly. I also cleared the cache on my computer and I still put in the blog.mydomain.com and still get my website…not my blog on wordpress. However, when Wix put it into their computer, they were able to see it. Do I need to change anything in the below, which I found in the domain section of wordpress?

    DNS Records

    Type

    Name

    Enter subdomain (optional)
    .blog.araiofstitches4u.com

    Points To

    e.g. 123.45.78.9
    Add New DNS Record

sorry for driving you nuts. It seems to be working. For whatever reason, on one of my users on the computer, even after clearing the cache, the blog doesn’t come up…but when I go to my other user, it works.

Thank you so very much for all of your time, patience and help!!!!!

  • For whatever reason, on one of my users on the computer, even after clearing the cache, the blog doesn’t come up…but when I go to my other user, it works.

This is most likely because you are only able to add the one A-record on Wix’s end. If your computer is connecting you to the IP address you did not add, the site won’t load like it does if you’re connecting to the IP you did add. There is no way to control which IP your computer will connect to, so unless Wix changes their system so you can add more than one A-record this might happen from time to time.

Also, now, when I’m in my account, all work that I put in there yesterday, “about” section and “contact” section, is missing. I can’t find it and anytime I hit anything, a screen to purchase the biz package pops up and I can’t do anything

Did you get this working again? I only see the one site in your account on the Personal Plan, so if you click on My Sites on WordPress.com you should see that site and be able to edit any content you’ve already added to it.

Is there someone that I can speak with to walk me through all of this and get this handled once and for all?!

In fact your Personal Plan gives you access to 24 hour live chat support during the week and US business hours on weekends. You can use this link to start a chat if we have an operator available:

Thank you again. Everything seems to be working but what you explained about WIX and the IP Address. They need to get their stuff together..whew. No wonder they advertise as much as they do. This is not the first tech issue I’ve run into with them. argh. Anyway, thank you!!!! I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me again at some point. ;) . Don’t run!

  • Wix doesn’t make it easy to use a domain you bought from them somewhere else, no, which makes sense – they want you to use the domain with them :)
