blogs i follow not showing all

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, I followed a thread that is now listed as closed, regarding all Blogs I Follow not showing up. I have not tried clearing my cache, which I generally dread doing, but will see if logging in and logging out helps. However, since I don’t like being a PIA and constantly bugging your staff and others with questions, I am wondering what is the best wordpress.com tutorial out there? And, is is correct that for non .org sites, no plug-ins are avail? (My 2 websites are paid, so I see that there is a bit of a difference.) Thanks so much.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there, please let me know if you continue having trouble getting the Blogs I Follow to show up and I’ll be happy to troubleshoot the issue with you!

    If you are looking for a general tutorial for using WordPress.com, you may be interested in our Learn WordPress.com tutorial here: http://learn.wordpress.com/

    If you have specific questions, you may also want to search these support forums for an answer or browse through the list of popular forum tags.

    You are correct that plugins are not available for WordPress.com sites. We don’t allow plugins on WordPress.com for security reasons. You can find out more about this here: http://support.wordpress.com/plugins/

    However, we do have several built-in features that were inspired by many popular plugins. You might find what you want by searching for it in our support pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks for the detailed reply. I don’t think all the blogs I’m following are showing up still, but will add some more this morning to test it out. I’ll report back. Meanwhile, thanks for the links. I’m definitely learning a lot by doing this myself.

    One other thing I’m trying to figure out is why my posts come up as archives when I click to them via the “my posts” drop down that I set up. I have another blog (for biz) w/ you and I set things up the same way and that does not happen.

    Again, my blog is read.eat.DEW.write if someone can look at it. Last question has to do w/rankings – which relates to the plugins. I guess there may be info in the links you provided? I just want to be able to get the stars that I need if asked by those who might like sponsored posts in the future.

    Really appreciate the help. You guys (and gals) rock.

    PS, not sure why that gravitar and account is popping up for this account. Is there a setting that I need to look at? This is the biz blog account I referred to above. I don’t want to confuse your team — or me!

    One other thing I’m trying to figure out is why my posts come up as archives when I click to them via the “my posts” drop down that I set up.

    I clicked on your “my posts” link and was taken to a list of your latest posts here:

    http://readeatdewwrite.wordpress.com/my-latest-posts/

    The page at that link shouldn’t be showing up as an archive page. However, if you click the other links in the drop down menu under “my posts,” those are category archive pages, which is why that label shows up at the top of the page there.

    If you would like, you can use your Custom Design upgrade to remove the “Category Archive” label on those pages with the following custom CSS:

    .category .page-title {
    	visibility: hidden;
    }
    .category .page-title span {
    	float: left;
    	visibility: visible;
    }

    Last question has to do w/rankings – which relates to the plugins. I guess there may be info in the links you provided?

    Is your concern about visitors to your site or how your site ranks in search engines? You can keep track of your site’s stats on your My Stats page here: http://wordpress.com/#!/my-stats/

    You can also learn about how WordPress.com works with search engines here: Search Engines

    PS, not sure why that gravitar and account is popping up for this account. Is there a setting that I need to look at?

    When you post in the forums, your username and Gravatar will appear for the account you are currently logged into. You can post with your other username and Gravatar by signing out of your current account and signing in again with the other username. :)

    Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi, and thanks again. I figured out the gravatar thing — I have 3 different wordpress accounts that I use, one is as a guest blogger, so that is why it was a bit of a mess. I rearranged all of my emails with the correct gravatar, so think that’s settled.

    I guess those stats are sufficient at the moment, as I am building my following, so I won’t worry too much about that just yet.

    Not certain that I can pull off fixing the archive situation, but worth a try! I’ll report back, and once again, thank you very much. Great customer service on your part.

    WOOT, it worked. Thank you. Now, since I went into CSS, I now see that you can change content width. I am not sure that I should do this, and am wondering what your recommendation is. I think the panel that I have for content (the “white space” where the text goes) is a fixed width, and that content should be proportionate. In layout, that space is wider than it shows up once the blog has been posted. You can see my inspiring spaces post for reference.

    Oy, such a newbie!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m glad that worked for you! :)

    Changing the content width in the Customizer actually won’t change the width of your blog’s content area. That setting is used to change the default width for full-size images, videos, and some shortcodes used in your blog. You can read more about that here: Editing CSS

    If you want to change the width of your blog content, you can use custom CSS to do that. You may want to take a look at our tips for learning and using CSS here: CSS Basics

    We also have a community forum that provides CSS customization help from both staff and volunteers:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

    Something to be aware of is that with most themes the post editor will not have exactly the same width and look as the published post on your blog. I encourage you to preview your posts before publishing them to see how they will look on the blog. We do have some themes that will display your blog posts just as they appear in the post editor. Those themes are called “editor style” themes — you can find them under Appearance > Themes in your dashboard by selecting the “Feature Filter” and checking the box next to “Editor Style” in the Features section.

    You’re good, girl, you’re good. I will study up and see what I learn and can do. I am happy with my blog’s appearance and do hit preview obsessively, I just wondered if I could do any trickery. I love the idea of posting 3 images in one line, and to do that with a “seeable” size, I think it’s not going to work with my theme. Thanks for the tips though. I want to learn more about both HTML and CSS, but, I like having the WP team to go to :)

    I see what you mean about wanting to post 3 images in one line. If you want to do that without making the images smaller, it’s possible that you can make some adjustments to the layout with custom CSS to make that happen! :)

    I highly recommend making a post in the CSS customization forum describing how you’d like it to look — there are some very helpful volunteers and staff who can probably pinpoint the CSS you’ll need:
