Blogs vs web sites

I want to convert an old site [www.MissingPortraits.info] to WordPress and am trying to choose a theme. Everyone I look at says something like ‘this is your first post’ which seems to indicate it’s a blog while I want a web site.
Is it just ambiguous wording, or am I getting something wrong?

You don’t have to have a blog page with any theme. If you want a website just remove the blog page and build your site with pages (and a menu for people to find stuff)

Most people here with free sites want blogs so the regular content they write as posts appear at the top of their sites and then visitors regularly see whatever is new first without any extra clicking around.
A website is a selection of static pages. People always see the same front page when they visit a site. It may be an intro or about page and suits some people with businesses. Visitors then have to actively navigate to other pages on the website to see further content.
That first post page you refer to is just demo content to give people some idea of how things will look. As I say you can delete the blog page and create other pages instead if thats how you’d like your site to look.
