blue host

Bluhost tells me if I cancel my link with them I will lose all my blog entries..is this true?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That seems unlikely, or at least very avoidable to me, but to better understand your options, you should go ask the people in the WordPress.ORG forum. They work with self-hosted WordPress sites.

    http://wordpress.org/support/

This forum is for sites hosted on WordPress.COM.

    Here’s the difference: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Good luck!

Bluhost tells me if I cancel my link with them

    exactly what does that mean?

experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com. – does not seem to have domain mapping and is hosted here – so if you do not have domain mapping even the URL would not be affected –

if you have a custom domain name – we need to know that to help you further

If you are hosted on BlueHost, then canceling your hosting will delete your blog entries

    my blog address: experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com

    Is that Bluehost host?

  • Unknown's avatar

No it’s not. http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com is hosted on WordPress.com.

Could you give us a little more context on your conversation with BlueHost? Unless you have domain mapping (and it doesn’t look like you do) I’m not sure how they would be involved in your site at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

My initial response assumed you had a website in addition to http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com. Could you confirm that is not the case? Are we only dealing with this site: http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com?

I am more concerned about keeping my blog with wordpress intact.
    experttravelitpsbygerri.wordpress.com

I do have another site: experttraveltipsbygerri.com which I barely use. Is this what blue host is talking about?

  • Unknown's avatar

    What is domain mapping?

I am only interested in keeping my blog entries etc. in: experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

How do I know if I have “custom domain” name? Does that mean Bluehost owns my domain name?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, it looks like your other site (experttraveltipsbygerri.com) is hosted on Bluehost–so chances are good that is the site they are talking about.

Your WordPress site (http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com/) is not connected to Bluehost at all.

So, my guess (and I haven’t seen the e-mail so I can’t be 100% sure, but I feel pretty confident based on what you’ve told me) is your hosting for your other website is about to expire. If you don’t do anything about that you will lose the content on that site, but the content on your WordPress.com site will be fine.

You purchased your domain (the actual url of your site) separately from GoDaddy and it doesn’t expire until July 30 2016, so even if you let the content of your other website be deleted, the url will still belong to you. That’s where domain mapping comes in.

Here is some basic information about domains and domain mapping: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

In your case if you wanted the URL you bought for your other site (experttraveltipsbygerri.com) to “point” to your existing WordPress.com site (http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com/) you could do that with the Domain Mapping upgrade.

    Does that help?

I’ve thrown a lot of concepts at you all at once, so if you have any questions or if something doesn’t make sense let me know.

lizdefair, you have been comprehensive in your answer for me. This is my case now I received a bill for $215.00 from Bluehost . If I check out the site: experttraveltipsbygerri.com, I only see one page. I have not used this at all. I use experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com and all my significant blogs are there. So if I cancel Bluehost, I will only lose that one page I mentioned? What is “jetpack”? They are saying that my site is not on…Is that part of Blue host and what does it do for me?
Second, I must go back and re-enlist with go daddy who charged me $50.00 in the same statement. I do not want to lose my experttraveltipsbygerri domain, is that right?
Sorry, I am working with two left hands; I love to write and I love to travel, paint and cook and all my blogs are very valuable to me. I confess I am just working with the blog world not knowing much about all the merchants that are involved/or not involved in getting my bogs across. Thank you for your further comments!

We cannot help you with Bluehost or GoDaddy. Not at all. We can only help you with http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com/. If you cancel Bluehost you will lose everything hosted at Bluehost.

You need to find out who handles your domain and renew with them, then buy the Domain Mapping upgrade for your WordPress.COM blog here to connect the domain to your blog.

So if I cancel Bluehost, I will only lose that one page I mentioned?

That is correct. You should also be able to save that content by exporting it to your computer before you cancel your BlueHost account assuming you still have access to that site’s dashboard.

What is “jetpack”? They are saying that my site is not on…Is that part of Blue host and what does it do for me?

Jetpack is a plugin for self-hosted sites that gives them access to many of the features available on WordPress.com. It also connects your self-hosted sites to your WordPress.com account. Since you are planning to cancel your hosting with Bluehost, you don’t need to worry about this.

Second, I must go back and re-enlist with go daddy who charged me $50.00 in the same statement. I do not want to lose my experttraveltipsbygerri domain, is that right?

There are two questions here, neither of which I can really help you with. From your whois page it didn’t look like your domain was expiring so I’m not sure what GoDaddy is charging you for, you’d have to contact them directly. As for the domain, in my opinion you don’t want to lose it as a custom domain is considered more professional than a subdomain on a larger site (which is what you have now with http://experttraveltipsbygerri.wordpress.com) so keeping that domain and mapping it to the WordPress.com site you use seems worthwhile. That having been said, you haven’t been using it so far, and dealing with the outside companies seems stressful for you, so it might not be worth the extra hassle. Only you can make that decision.

    Hope that helps!
