Bluehost domain and using wordpress.org

  I bought and created my domain through Bluehost and manage my dashboard, etc. through what looks to be wordpress.org. However, I’m wanting the community aspect, ‘reader’ view, etc. that wordpress.COM has what with being able to follow each other, post comments, etc. Does this mean I need to transfer my domain to wordpress.com? Or should I map my domain instead? Why is there an additional charge per year for mapping my domain to wordpress? Would be good to know what others have done in similar situations. Thanks!

  No. You can continue running your very own WordPress installation. All you need to do is incorporate the Jetpack plugin on your site.
