Bluehost Domain Name on WordPress.com

Hi there I am a first time designer trying to set up a site for a client who has recently purchased a domain name through Bluehost. Would it be possible to use WordPress.com for hosting my domain and what steps do I need to take to make this happen. I saw that transfers and mapping are options but transfers require a 60 day wait and mapping requires a paid account?

  • We have two options for using a domain you already own with a site hosted here:

Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

Both require a paid plan, any paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Thanks for the response! If the domain was recently purchased then I won’t be able to transfer the domain name until 60 days later right?

Or does this only apply if I change the contact info of the person who signed up for the domain?

  • It can depend on the situation and we don’t have a lot of insight into domains taht are not registered with us directly, so you may need to contact Bluehost support to confirm if you can (or can’t) transfer the domain.

The good news is that you can always map the domain (if the transfer is blocked) so you can use the domain on WordPress.com without any waiting… then when the 60 days are up you can complete the transfer at that time. Because the domain is already “mapped” the transfer would be totally seamless so there would be no interruption in your site uptime.

Domain mapping (and one free domain transfer) is included in all our plans listed here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
