[BoardWalk theme] Precedence for post's image to be displayed at homepage

  • Unknown's avatar

Let say my post content has few photo but there is no featured image, which one of those photo will be selected for display at homepage? From the posts I had made so far, the precedence appears not following any of the below:
    1. Photo orientation (horizontal vs vertical)
    2. Photo’s order in gallery
    3. Photo’s order in post’s content
    4. Photo’s name
    5. Time when photo were taken

I need to know the precedence so that I will be able to properly control appearance of homepage. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • From Broadwalk theme support document:

If your post doesn’t have a featured image but does include images, Boardwalk will display the first image attached to the post.

Search for Only use featured images on blog index on the above support guide to learn more.

Hi Chaitanyamsv, thanks for the input. The description matches my very first guess, but the actual behaviour does not follow this. In my case (without featured image), frontpage displays no image when that checkbox is selected; but displayed random image (rather than the first image) when the checkbox is unchecked. For instance, when open the frontpage momentsu.wordpress.com:
    – the 1st image is displayed for post dated August 9 (which is correct).
    – the 2nd image is displayed for post dated July 21.
    – the 15th image is displayed for post dated June 28.
    – the 3rd image is displayed for post dated June 13.

The Boardwalk Theme selects theme is its can turn is proper view on home page whether is a featured image or not, so i advice you chose another theme, or continuing use the boardwalk theme

  • @shiouming

Ah, I get what you are saying.

Looks like the theme is picking the featured images a bit randomly. I tagged this post for staff’s attention so they can check and confirm if we are missing something.

Please hold on until staff gets a chance to check this for you.

  • I think this confusion is arising from a misunderstanding of what this means:

Boardwalk will display the first image attached to the post.

The first image attached to a post is always the first image uploaded in a new post. Even if you change the order of those images later, or insert the image in another post via the Media Library, it’s the first image you uploaded that is “attached” to that first post.

You can see what images are attached to each post in your Media Library by switching to list view, and looking at the Uploaded to column. The first image in that column for a post is the first image attached to that post.

    @kathrynwp
Take the post dated July 21 as example, the black swan photo is the 2nd photo that got uploaded into media library among photos for this post. It is also the 2nd photo that got inserted/attached into that post. However, it still get selected to be displayed at homepage momentsu.wordpress.com.

  • Thanks for pointing me to that post. This is an interesting one! It turns out that attached images in galleries take precedence over images not in galleries. Since the swan image is in a gallery that’s why it’s being pulled out on the blog page.

There is a workaround, which is to detach your gallery images from the post. You can do this in your Media Library by clicking the word “detach” next to every image attached to that post except the one you want used on the blog page.

Uploading a featured image explicitly is ultimately the best solution as it gives you the most control over which image is used. With custom CSS – which I realize isn’t currently something you have access to – you can then hide the image on single posts if you prefer not to have it displayed there.

Let me know if detaching the gallery images does the trick.

Thanks kathrynwp. I try the trick with another post that has less photo, it seems to work :) Thanks for the advice from chaitanyamsv and shaxee too.

I’m surprise that after detaching a photo from post, it will still be displayed properly in the post’s content. Is there a page where I can learn more about this attach/detach concept?

  • Glad that did the trick!

Right, I know the concept of “attached media” in WordPress can be bit hard to wrap one’s head around. You can read a bit about it in the WordPress Codex:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Image_and_File_Attachments#Attachment_to_a_Post

Hmm… I still can’t figure out the purpose of attach/detach feature. What is the benefit of making media file “attached”?

  • It allows themes to perform a number of actions based on an image’s attachment to a specific post. For example, in Boardwalk, if no featured image is uploaded to a post, you can have a fallback where the first attached image is displayed on the blog instead. In other themes, images attached to a post can be pulled out and displayed in a sidebar.

I see. Thanks for sharing. I think it will be nice to include this useful info in the previously provided link :)
