Bold type in caption is letterspaced

  Occasionally I want to include some bold type in a caption. However, instead of bold type, I get added letterspacing instead. This is ugly, distracting, and hard to read, and not at all what I want. Why does this happen and how can I get just normal bold type in my captions? I have the CSS upgrade, if that will help.
