Will there be a replacement for the bookmarklet that was recently deprecated? I have a physical disability and relied on Press This!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am not very sure why Press This was deprecated. I am sorry that it has affected your experience.
I have added a tag “modlook” in this topic. One of the members from the WordPress.com staff/WordPress.com Happiness Engineers should be able to help you through this.

Hello there, There is a Staff reply in this now-closed main discussion about the removal of PressThis. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-the-wordpress-bookmarklet-was-deprecated-please-delete-it?replies=50#post-3042576
In short, the bookmarklet found in the WP Admin area was removed in the recent update by the standalone WP software on which our platform is based.
Regardless, you can still use the WordPressdotcom bookmarklet utility found in your New Dashboard/Calypso. More on that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/press-this/
Let us know if you have any other question.

Hi there,
The Press This bookmarklet in WP-Admin forms part of the Core WordPress software and was removed by the WordPress.org community who maintains that software. That’s the same software we use on WordPress.com, which means it was also removed here. Replacing it with our own version would essentially mean modifying the core software, which makes all future software updates problematic, so it’s not something we’re planning to do.
As @justjennifer said above, though, our My Sites/Calypso interface also has a Press This bookmarklet as that interface is our own code and doesn’t form part of the Core software. It uses the My Sites editor instead of the WP-Admin editor, but otherwise it should work more or less the same in how you use it.

Thanks for the replies!
I have used the recommended “My Sites/Calypso” Press This over the weekend. I find it requires a lot of manual input after the fact. It is slow and a bit buggy but it works.
Is there any chance this bookmarklet can be enhanced in the near future?

Can you explain what you mean by buggy? What exactly is going wrong when you use it?
I find it requires a lot of manual input after the fact.
Can you also please expand on this?
I checked the bookmarklet – it creates a new draft post, populated with any text you had highlighted in the page you were on when clicking it, and a link back to the original. All I needed to manually add was a post title, and optionally tags and categories if I want to use those.

Hi Kokkieh,
Sorry for the delay.

1. After the New Post window opens I don’t get a Title. In the Post Body I have one line that starts with “via…”. I’m ok at that point. If you place the cursor on the beginning of the “via” line and hit enter once, that line will drop down one line then jump back up to the fist line again. If you wait for 3 seconds the title now displays.
2. I can not get any images to extract into the New Post window.

I have to add an image, place a quote and change via to Source. In some cases I add a link to a G+ post or a Tumblr post just above the “via” line (after doing the enter trick) and that link gets extracted and the page gets rendered into my post. (This happened automatically with the old bookmarklet.)
This new bookmarklet is a little slow also.
Hope this helps.
Thanks!
Kelly

1. After the New Post window opens I don’t get a Title.
That is intentional. If you save/publish the post without setting a title, the first few words from the content will be set as the title automatically, but initially the editor is loaded without a title to give you the chance to explicitly set a title.
If you place the cursor on the beginning of the “via” line and hit enter once, that line will drop down one line then jump back up to the fist line again. If you wait for 3 seconds the title now displays.
Making any change triggers autosave, which adds a title as I explained above. The jumping behaviour is because autosave removes the blank line at the top. That is also intentional, as you cannot add blank lines in an HTML-based editor by just pressing Enter. This happens in the WP-Admin editor as well, though only when you explicitly save a draft, rather than on autosave.
2. I can not get any images to extract into the New Post window.
Do you mean images from the page you’re “Press”ing don’t appear in the post automatically? The Calypso Press This bookmarklet is not designed to auto-embed images in the post. You need to use the Add Media button to do that.
However, you’ll probably be happy to know that two days ago we added our own version of the WP-Admin bookmarklet back on WordPress.com. You will again find that in the Tools section in the WP-Admin dashboard.

Kokkieh,
Thanks for clarifying the differences between the two bookmarklets.

Yes! Sounds like the Calypso Press This is not for me.

This is great news for me! I have switched to the WP-Admin version. I am happy again!
Thank you!
