Bought domain for life but got email saying expired

My website is now down – help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Aloha bakedfoodtruck, Are you referring to https://bakedfoodtruck.wordpress.com/? The website is loading for me, but it looks like there is no content there. Did you have anything published?
-
@ Geoffrey I think they are referring to a different site. Can anyone buy a Domain for life? http://bakedfoodtruck.com/ expired on October 3rd and is now in redemption. Was that domain via WordPress.com? You need to respond to that email straight away. Often domains can be recovered but there will now be extra charges.

I bought a domain last year forever from them for a set fee, don’t understand what’s going on
-
The only domains I know of that last forever are free ones from the likes of WordPress.com. Otherwise you pay for them and they periodically have to be renewed.
The site linked to your name doesn’t have www in it. In fact hardly any sites do these days. Are you sure the site you’re talking about isn’t http://bakedfoodtruck.com. A Whois lookup shows the following:-
Domain Name: BAKEDFOODTRUCK.COM
Registrar: WILD WEST DOMAINS, LLC
Sponsoring Registrar IANA ID: 440
Whois Server: whois.wildwestdomains.com
Referral URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com
Name Server: No nameserver
Status: redemptionPeriod https://icann.org/epp#redemptionPeriod
Updated Date: 15-nov-2016
Creation Date: 03-oct-2014
Expiration Date: 03-oct-2016 -

And it expired almost two months ago. You said:-
“Bought domain for life but got email saying expired”.
Have you responded to that email?

I’m no expert but obviously you need to pay up for a further period along with the extra charge for the domain redemption fee. Did you buy your domain through WordPress.com or elsewhere? (Wild West Domains are connected with WordPress). If it was WordPress.com then reply here and type modlook in the tag box on the right of this page and staff will respond in due course. If you bought your domain via someone else then contact them. There are two links above. In one of them it says:-
“If you want to keep your domain, you must immediately contact your registrar to resolve whatever issues resulted in your registrar requesting that your domain be deleted, which resulted in the redemption period status for your domain. Once any outstanding issues are resolved and the appropriate fee has been paid, your registrar should restore the domain on your behalf.”

@bakedfoodtruck Hi there, you’ll want to read this while you are waiting for Staff to reply to understand the redemption recovery process: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/ Recovering a domain in the redemption period will also require your agreement to pay the recovery fee in addition to the domain renewal.
How long does a registration last? Can it be renewed?
Each registrar has the flexibility to offer initial and renewal registrations in one-year increments, provided that the maximum remaining unexpired term shall not exceed ten years. To the best of my knowledge and experience, WordPressdotcom offers domain renewal 1-year at a time.
Let’s wait now for Staff to reply.

@bakedfoodtruck, @justjennifer and @themagicrobot are correct; we don’t offer domains for life.
A premium theme purchase does not expire, and I can see you have one of those; perhaps that’s the source of the confusion. But domains do expire if they are not renewed. We email expiration notices, too, as you’ve noticed.
Your domain is in redemption at this point: basically it was returned to the registrar, and they now charge an extra $80 to get it back, or they can sell it if you don’t redeem it. I can make an invoice for the redemption fee plus the yearly registration fee if you’d like.

You could have speeded things up if you’d responded to @supernovia. I’ve added modlook in the tag box and hopefully staff will reply to you in due course with the appropriate invoice to re-activate your site.

Hi there,
I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore bakedfoodtruck.com to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back. If I am successful, I can send you a manual payment request form for you to repurchase the domain.
I will let you know once I hear back from the registrar.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!
