Bought domain name thru WP, need to wait 60 days to self-host?

    Last night, I bought both a domain name through WordPress and a Godaddy hosting package–only to see the message below on the WordPress support page:

    If you registered a domain through WordPress.com, and wish to transfer that, as well, please review this document. Note that you can only transfer a domain after 60 days from its initial registration. If it has not yet been 60 days, you can still update your nameservers and point them to your new host.

    So does this mean I will have to wait 60 days to get a self-hosted site? All I want is the option to get a few plugins on my page. Should I cancel the purchase of a domain name through WordPress and get it instead from Godaddy to meet ICANN rules? Very, very confused :(

    The 60 day rule for transferring domains applies with any registrar.

    If it has not yet been 60 days, you can still update your nameservers and point them to your new host.

    That’s what you need to do to get your self-hosted site.

    After the 60 day period you can then formally transfer your domain to GoDaddy or whoever else you chose to be your registrar.

    You can still get a self-hosted site. You just need to keep the ownership of the domain name itself at WordPress.com for 60 days before you can transfer the name. You can update the DNS settings (the name servers) and use another web hosting provider at any time:

    Note that it’s generally not advisable to cancel a domain name once it has been purchased. First, you must make the request within 2 days. Then, it can take up to several days for the domain to become available again to the public. There is no guarantee you would be the one to get the name back. The best route in these cases is to update the name servers and then transfer the domain to either your web hosting provider or to a dedicated registrar after 60 days.

    Thanks husdal and designsimply–I still don’t really understand how to do this, being a new user, but I will do some more reading online and ask some friends.
