Brand name taken as a wordpress domain
-
Hello,
I have a doubt. I’m working for a brand that’s going to start managing its own blog on wordpress. The problem that I find is that its name (the brand, literally) is taken by another user, like brand.wordpress.com.
I know that I can use another domain and host my blog on it, but in terms of SEO is dangerous to have this other blog opened, although is totally inactive nowadays.
Is there any option for registered brands? Can I ask for wordpress domains that use a brand literally?

Thank you! But here doesn’t say anything about registered brands…
Do I have to understand that a registered brand is treated as any other common word and that wordpress can’t do anything?

An inactive blog using your brand name should not adversely affect your SEO. I would recommend that you use a domain rather than a vanilla “.wordpress.com” name anyway. This looks more professional and gives you flexibility if you ever want to move your blog without losing search-engine ranking.

Yes, I agree with you about the SEO, but there’s always the possibility that this blog started posting and became famous…
Anyway, thanks for your help, I’ll try to contact directly with the owner of the blog, but for sure we’re going to create a new domain, our main concern was the possible SEO effects.

I don’t think there’s much you can do about it until WordPress delete’s the URL, since it’s inactive.

My understanding is that in some cases you can prevent someone posting using a registered trademark. You couldn’t take the blog off them but you might be able to get an injunction to stop them making it active again.
I would leave this as a last resort though, and only if they started using it and affecting SEO. A friendly approach would be much better – if the current owner has no intention of using it again he may be happy to hand it over to you for a few tens of dollars, a fraction of what legal processes would cost!

^^ That would depend on the word(s) involved [OP hasn’t stated], how many other possible applications it may have in different countries, whether the holder can even be contacted, let alone served, etc., etc., etc.
