Brand new… what the hell is going on?

Plenty of articles and blogs suggest that WordPress is great for artists. I am quite website illiterate so would love to use a ready-made service like this. I haven’t begun working on a website through WordPress and here is why:
Vague- When I look into starting my page (I own the domain through WordPress and have am account already) I come to a page where they offer 3 plans. The details are lacking. For example, Premium comes with “all premium benefits” and Free with “all free benefits”. When I click on what I assume I might like I get a prompt to pay them money. For what?! I really am old-fashioned being that I like to know the specifics if I am to pay for something. I can’t get info anywhere else on the site.
Support, Lack-there-of- How does one actually converse with WordPress support staff? Articles and blogs tout the support aspect of using WordPress as a host but I cannot see that any active support exists aside from users helping users. You would think that WordPress would at least try to hook new customers by offering some support initially.
Am I an alien or do other folks feel this way? What would you suggest?
