Bring Back Classic Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

The block editor is completely unusable. I need to just make posts and edit existing posts. I have zero need for the block editor. Please give me an option to use the classic editor. I’m not on a paid plan, so I can’t install plugins.

    Hi,

The block editor does take some getting used to, and everyone has different interface preferences. However, you can still use the classic interface within the block editor by typing /classic or by selecting the classic view from the block editor. I personally find the verbose shortcut a little easier, especially if you already dislike the block editor.

You can also access the classic editor from the WP-Admin dashboard! For more information on this, see:

    https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor

    Hope that helps!

Ugh. So now I need to go to WP-Admin in order to make posts? I just tried that, and while it looks a little different, it does seem to work… but it’s extra steps. I used to be able to just click “add new” and boom I was writing a new post.

Thanks for the direction, I suppose this will have to do. It’s not that I dislike the block editor. It just flat out doesn’t work. Not a preference. I have just spent 2 hours just trying to make a post with it and it’s an unusable mess. Can’t even format text or create paragraph headers. And this is the new default?

The WP-Admin workaround is doable for now, but if that ever goes away I’ll be looking for a new platform I guess.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I agree. Users should be able to set their preference easily and not have to be bothered again, and I can only hope your feedback and others like it helps inform future design decisions. Criticism is an important step in fueling growth, and I know they’re always trying to improve things. Sometimes there can be some questionable steps in that process though.

    Thank you for your patience!

And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

The block editor is complete, unusable trash and nobody asked for this. I’m not interested in it at all and I’m considering abandoning WordPress because of this. What I want is to disable it completely. So your links are not helpful. Thanks for nothing.

  • Unknown's avatar

The staff is not listening obviously. Bring back the classic editor. WP screwed the pooch with the upgrade to the block editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

Clearly not listening. They don’t care. I’ve been a WP user for 11 years and now I’m basically looking for a different platform. This is incredibly disappointing. :(

  • Unknown's avatar

I totally agree. I just want to make quick posts. I make about 80 posts a month. The old editor was perfect. Simple and quick. Nobody asks for it but now they installed the block editor. Totally useless for me and a ton of work to make a simple, quick post with some pictures. Very dissapointing. No improvement whatsoever. Mayby for somebody who post 1 or 2 month and want to spend hours on a post but for me it is useless and time absorbing. Just what I don’t need.
I don’t understand why they are forcing this on us. Why not make it an option? Also for the new unexperienced WordPress user, block editor is way to complicated.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m a very experienced WordPress user and it’s way too complicated for me as well.

Bonus: I’ve worked in IT for 25 years.

If your new UI is so complicated that staff members need to post lots of links to documentation on it just so you can figure out how to do basic things, you have failed at UI design.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well I am not an IT guy but I know some things and working with computers for more than 30 years but this is just to complicated. It’s really a shame because I do think people get turned off by this block editor especially new people and it will hurt WordPress as a company. I not like to see that happen because I like WordPress and they do not deserve this. But what were they thinking?
I started with WordPress in 2014/15 and that editor back then was clean and simple. A joy to work with.

So, coming back to this, I should say that using the WP-Admin interface isn’t a great workaround either. I just wrote a blog post with it and things don’t work the same way as they did with the “classic” (or should I say “correct”?) editor prior to the useless block editor being shoved down my throat.

The way you insert hyperlinks doesn’t work correctly, you have to hit the gear icon to actually change the display text (that was never necessary before, it just showed everything you needed right out of the gate).

There is also a bunch of stuff at the bottom that should be on the right hand pane (like excerpt, for example).

There is also a persistent NAG message at the very top that tries to convince me that the completely unusable block editor is somehow “better”, which is factually incorrect.

I’m able to hide that element with my ad blocker to get it out of the way (it’s a waste of vertical space, and it’s insulting to my intelligence, given that I’m aware of the block editor already and I already know it’s not a viable alternative).

This is a pretty disappointing experience, so I’m keenly interested if anyone has any other suggestions or workarounds.

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, the line spacing is screwed up. There’s too much space between the header sections and the following paragraph, and there’s too much space between lines in my bullet point section, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to fix this.

At this point I’m thinking just using HTML might be the easier way to go? That’s unfortunate, because up until this nonsense, there was a perfectly usable WYSIWYG editor built into WordPress, and that seems to be completely gone.

This WP-Admin “workaround” isn’t a workaround at all… the editor that presents is NOT the correct one, it’s just another interface slapped onto something that doesn’t work right.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh yeah, also, the tag chooser doesn’t work properly. Rather than give me a dropdown of every tag, there is instead a “most used tags” cloud, which is NOT the same thing. If I know what I’m looking for and start typing it, it will show up, but I wasn’t able to see a way to view ALL tags, which is frustrating.

Additionally, “preview” used to just preview the post… now it opens it in a completely different tab, which is annoying to have to switch back and forth.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you’re needlessly nitpicking. The Calypso editor that has been removed was never the real classic editor. It was always a halfway house and never as intuitive as the wp-admin editor.

There is also a bunch of stuff at the bottom that should be on the right hand pane (like excerpt, for example).

You can enable disable and move stuff around and set two columns via Screen options.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I think you’re needlessly nitpicking.

I think I didn’t ask your opinion. The purpose here isn’t what you think of my posts, but to seek a viable workaround for functionality problems with WordPress’ editor, which used to work great, and now does not.

If you do not have any useful workarounds to the issues I am taking the time to detail, I suggest you go reply somewhere else. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

This is an open forum and I am entitled to an opinion. You’re shouting your opinion loud enough. I gave you one workaround didn’t I?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not interested in engaging with you if you are not going to be helpful. I’m not shouting an opinion, I’m soliciting advice. Your opinion and your “workaround” are not helpful, so please refrain from trying to derail my topic. I’ve asked nicely, please do me the courtesy.

Ok I have something to say in defence of WordPress. I am struggling with the block editor and I am getting the hang of it. It’s not so bad. Give you more options to enhance things. So I can see the value of the new editor.

    Wordpress:
One major improvement could be done though. Still block editor is confusing. For one simple reason. If this could be fixed it would be much better and clear. I think this is the major problem.
The post I am making is out of blocks who I can stack together. It would me much more clear for everybody if the blocks are with lines, thus making it a visual square. So I can visually see 2-3-4 blocks on top of eachother. And the block that is active for instance a blue outline. So people know they are working on the particulair block.

    Trentechnic:
I feel your frustration. I had the same. It really can f up your world, I know. What works for me is just put it aside for a day or a few days. Do nothing on your website. Give it a rest. And think about the problems you’re running in. You can clear your head, come up with ideas and you have refreshd energy to get that sucker!

Yeah, I know. And I do agree. That’s why you see a date gap above. I didn’t touch this for several days, hoping that would help. It didn’t. At this point without a pretty major workaround I’m still basically looking for alternative platforms since the problems with WordPress seem to be by design.

After being a user for eleven years, this is super sad for me to have to consider.:(
