Bring Back Hello World Post

  • Unknown's avatar

The Hello World default Post has went away, only to be replaced by Nothing – so blogs now start with a ‘can’t find anything” – we get many people showing up in a panic on “Deleted Blogs” when all that is wrong is that there is no content in it – Either the Hello World or if that is too much like Old time – maybe Welcome to Your new Blog, or Welcome to my new Blog –

Might save us several panic Posts a day in the support forum

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, please. SERIOUSLY DO THIS. I am going on strike; never answering another “my blog had disappeared!” thread again if you don’t bring back something, anything, to tell people they haven’t done anything wrong right off the bat. It’s a shitty way to start blogging, with a panic attack.

    Good idea RC –

maybe we should Modlook all the “my blog has disappeared” or “my blog was deleted” – when all this is wrong is the Hello World Post was never there to start with

    Hi auxclass and raincoaster,

Now, let’s not get too hasty! It would be mighty quiet ’round these parts without you guys! :)

We dropped the Hello World post as part of our new user interface, where we prompt new users to create a post rather than default with the Hello World post.

Existing users who create a new blog don’t get the same prompt, it’s true, but ideally by the time someone is creating a new blog they will know how to create a first post or set things up to not display a blog. When they get stuck, that’s where we come in. :)

When they get stuck, that’s where we come in. :)

This is confusing. Who are “they” and who are “we?”

Do new accounts/users/blogs get a message about how to set up their sites while a current user gets a 404 not found error when adding a new blog to her/his account? I already have so many blogs on various accounts that I don’t want to experiment by setting up any more to test what a new user vs a new blog on a current account sees.

I set up a blog last night as a test then deleted it (also as a test) – I guess I would be called an existing user – My new blog had the blank opening page with 404 not here, try searching etc message

I just think that should go away with at least the Hello World – REMEMBER not everyone reads things, others might very well be too busy or whatever to go through the steps to create a new Post at the time they signup.

Many people seem to signup then start working on a Post and have problems with the Post or get confused as to how to get started – so hand holding and stepping through the first post seems to be not always working.

And what about the person setting up their second blog? The first one had the Hello World, that was maybe two years ago, no step through anything, only to be greeted with the 404 message today

I have not changed my position from the first post above

I agree with you completely. Thanks for explaining what you did to discover this “new and improved” non-greeting.

If new accounts/blogs are getting different messages then that should be an announcement about this improvement to save some pixels or 0s and 1 on servers.

My question is: do new users see a placeholder with links to learn wordpress or something to get started while someone adding a second or third blog gets a 404 error. And why???

And are “we” the volunteers in these forums supposed to answer those questions which could have been resolved with the initial post on a new blog?

If you create a new WordPress.com account, you should be directed to create your first post on your first blog. However, if you are an existing user creating a new blog, you will need to create your first post manually.

We have staff who are working on improving the signup/blog creation process, and we understand that there may be some bumps in the road as we figure out the best solution for our new and existing users.

I’d prefer it if the guiding documentation and UI prevented people from getting stuck, rather than directed them to appropriate help once they ARE stuck. That goes for old users AND new.

    @RC – on target as always –

We have staff who are working on improving the signup/blog creation process, and we understand that there may be some bumps

Perhaps having the staff (if they would really listen) involve / ask those that are NOT staff what they think of the changes might be a good idea. I used to design software and UI for industrial equipment, the stakes? If I made a mistake things could go Boom or people could die, and yes we had the operators and users involved in the review process.

While nobody seems to get it right the first time, the less bumps for people the better AND the better the reputation of WordPress.COM is.

SIGH … I’m to unwell to get into the fray aside from saying I don’t thing removing the Hello World posts is a good idea.

Nerts! I used the blockquote above on the wrong part of my comment. It’s back to bed for me. :(
