Broken images after migrating blog posts to WordPress.com
-
Hi,
My blog is running on a self-hosted version of WordPress (4.9.8). Images from the Media library are embedded in posts with a “src” attribute like “/wp/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/xyz.jpg”.
I’ve exported ‘All Content’ using Tools > Export, and imported the resulting XML file on a brand new blog hosted on WordPress.com. All posts have been successfully migrated over, and the images are visible in the new Media library, but the images have new URLs like <blogname>.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/xyz.jpg.
Thus none of the images appear in the migrated posts. I am surprised that the Importer plugin didn’t update the image paths in the migrated posts since it doesn’t preserve their original path…
Is there a way for me to fix that (other than by hand, since there are 700+ posts) given I don’t have access to the underlying database?
Resources or instructions appreciated.

Good morning –
Occasionally the paths don’t update correctly. I’ve asked the team for some help. I’ll report back once we get it sorted.

The original blog is http://bouhours-lecomte.ca/wp/
We’re looking to shutdown our contract with the hosting provider, so the migrated content on WordPress cannot link back to it.
I’ve read about this plugin, which could potentially help: https://wordpress.org/plugins/auto-upload-images/

Thanks for writing back. You won’t be able to run that plugin on the WordPress.com site though unless you’re upgraded to the business plan.
We can get the image links sorted. I’ve made a request for it now. I just needed the original source.

Thanks!
Would you know when the team would be able to get at sorting the image links? (ballpark, just trying to get a sense of whether it’s hours, days, week…)
Appreciate your help on this matter

Because if it’s longer than a couple of days, I’ll have to renew my hosting contract to keep the site up.

Hi jerle76,
This will likely take longer than a couple of days. I’m afraid I’m unable to give you more of a definite timeframe for when our developers will be able to look at this, so it would be worth keeping the other site online if you need the images on your self hosted site to continue displaying.

Hey staff-zinnia and @gemmacevans, I’ve tried another blog import a few days ago. This time the images were imported into the Media library, and the posts updated to use the Media library copies.
Looks like the team fixed the issue. Thanks for your help! The case is closed as far as I’m concerned. -
