browser or general problem(s)?

    http://naturalspeed.wordpress.com/

    When I checked my site in Safari, my page was unavailable. The post worked. Also, I still don’t understand why the editor (with tag line) looks different from the header. I’ve tried different templates but this is the only one that was wide. I’d like to have a darker background color (not so bright white) but I guess I can’t change that. Right? In the meantime, what am I doing wrong? I don’t use Safari, but someone else might. Can these sites be viewed easily internationally? The more I learn, the behinder I go.

    wordpress is best viewed with firefox. it has been noted in the forums before that browsers like safari and internet explorer have problems like misalignment and such when the blog is viewed.

    When I checked my site in Safari, my page was unavailable.

    Does this mean that your blog is inaccessible in safari but accessible in other browsers?

    Also, I still don’t understand why the editor (with tag line) looks different from the header. I’ve tried different templates but this is the only one that was wide. I’d like to have a darker background color (not so bright white) but I guess I can’t change that.

    I don’t understand this part. Could you be explain some more?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, let me try and explain my blathering on. That’s right: when I checked in Safari, there was no post connected to the link I had set up at englishoke.com.

    Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.

    The other stuff: I had asked about some of this before in a previous forum today/(technically) yesterday. If the tag line is showing in the editor, I wonder why it doesn’t display in the header. I want to post or write pages that are wide across so there isn’t a lot of wrapping around. Some of my documents are long. Rubric seems to be the widest without using CSS which I neither own or understand right now.

    The background Q is not as important. I just think it’s a little easier on the eyes to read against a background that isn’t quite so bright. Thanks for your reply. I’ll probably be checking back tomorrow/(technically later today).

    We did have some server glitches earlier today. Check back and see if you’re still having problems seeing the post.

    And we will always be able to help you better if you give us the URL or at least the title of the post you’re talking about. That way if we can see it, we can puzzle out what’s happening.

    WordPress.com templates look different in different browsers; that is more or less the same with the whole internet, not just us. You will NEVER get it to look identical in different browsers, so save time and give up.

    You will not be able to substantively change the look of your blog without the CSS upgrade. Please don’t re-post the exact same questions in different threads. It only makes more work for the volunteers.

    Not every theme has taglines enabled.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay, and if you have a problem that you later find the solution for (ie post didn’t go up/post did go up but you didn’t see it before), don’t edit the problem out of the original post. It looks bizarre, and makes the answers in the thread less useful for other people trying to find answers to their questions.

    (1) Tagline – Play it again Sam — Yesterday I advised you twice that you chose a theme called which Rubic is hardcoded not to show a tagline. And, I gave you the link to the theme reviews so you could confirm that. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=12510

    (2) You cannot change the background colour of the blog or header area without a css upgrade.

    (3) Here’s the information on Safari http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/20/im-using-safari-and-i-have-problems/

    (4) Rubic is not the theme with the largest blogging space. Shocking Blue Green, Silver is the New Black and WordPress Classic have the largest blogging spaces — 800 pixels. You can confirm this here. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/

    wordpress is best viewed with firefox.

    Um. no.

  • Unknown's avatar

    My admin bar no longer shows using IE but does show when using Firefox. Anyone else having this problem? It’s been going on for about a week with me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Log out, clear your browser’s file and cookie cache and try again.

  • Unknown's avatar

    wordpress is best viewed with firefox.

    Um. Yes.

    The cross platform performance of many themes is lamentable.

  • Unknown's avatar

    There has been no official statement from wordpress staff that firefox is the prefered browser. The only offical response concerning browser support has been with safari and it’s lack of javascript support.

    If such was true, do you think we would have all those issues with the image uploader being in an iframe.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have tried logging out and clearning the cache with firefox several times. I’m not sure I did it right or really know how to clear the cookies and cache. Do I do it from the browser’s preferences itself?

    What’s an iframe, and which themes are in iframe? Is it compatible with any other Mac programs like iWeb?

    The links I read before were not helpful which is why I needed to post a similar question. Timethief posted several links, many of which I had already read beforehand that added to my confusion. One of them says that Rubric (“Rubrick”) has no page template. Could that be the problem since the link that doesn’t post in Safari is a page? Of course that doesn’t make sense either since the template itself appears, just not the content I put in there. I thought I was almost done, but I’m going to need to know that my blog works for content (not necessarily style) on all the popular browsers. Since it meant to teach English, I’d like to know someone can bring it up in say, Japan.

    “Log out, clear your browser’s file and cookie cache and try again. “

    Didn’t work :(

    Hi could you please answer these questions that drmike frequently asks:

    What browser and version of it do you use?
    What is your operating system?
    Which security program(s) do you use?
    Have you had any recent security updates?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @englishoke:

    Ignore the iframe comment. That was part of an off-topic discussion between drmike & atthe404.

    Add the “Pages” widget to your sidebar under Presentation->Widgets so your readers have a place to look for pages

    Give us the URL of the page that is not showing up

    International use is not an issue here. There are wordpress.com users all over the world, and the only places that occasionally have problems are those ruled by regimes that don’t take kindly to free thought and expression.

    @englishoke

    One of them says that Rubric (“Rubrick”) has no page template.

    (1) No. I did not say that the Rubric theme had no page template. I said the Rubric it does not display taglines.

    (2) This will help you with widgets. It was included in the Beginner’s Guide link I gave you previously understanding widgets and how to set them up

    (3) Note that there is a difference between pages and posts http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/11/a-post-and-a-page/
    Pages are for static content. They do not automatically update. You cannot assign categories to them and they have no google juice.

    (4) Here is a walk-through on how to create a “Page”.
    -> Dashboard -> Write -> Page
    Write your text and click “Publish”

    Now -> Dashboard -> Presentation-> Widgets
    Look for the Pages widget in the “Available widgets” box, drag it out and drop it into the “Sidebar Widgets” box and click “Save Changes”

    View your blog and you should see the page you created as well as a link to it in your sidebar where you placed the Pages widget.

    Happy Blogging :)

    @mypinktruth
    The questions above were for you to answer. How are you doing now?

  • Unknown's avatar

    If you go to englishoke.com and click on the link: ELR Pilot (first show) you can see (or can’t see) the page that doesn’t show up in Safari. You can also go to naturalspeed.wordpress.com and click on the link; same thing happens. The link itself that doesn’t show up in Safari is http://naturalspeed.wordpress.com/?page_id=5.

    I added a page widget, but don’t know how to use it. I also added a text widget. That one has the link to my page. I don’t know how to use the page widget. I put a title in it, but it doesn’t show up anywhere. Not sure what it’s for.

    Thanks for the intriguing answer about the international quality of WordPress. Once I get it going, I’ll ask some of my ex-students to try it out–mostly in Japan (luckily no regime problems there).

  • Unknown's avatar

    I do not see the Page widget you mention in your sidebar.
    This is what I see:
    Archives
    June 2007

    Text
    ELR Pilot (first show)

    And when I click on either one I get “Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.”

    To Judy: (Why do we use the at sign?)

    Oh well. Time to get on with the day. Thanks Judy. I really like your site and see that you understand the widgets well. (I’ve always wanted to go to India . . . .) Hope to hear back from you on page widgets and/or page and browser stuff–will be checking in later. Cheers.
