Bueno theme: widening post and header width

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello all! I have just purchased a bundle and am looking into my customization options for the first time. I have no experience with CSS and would love some help! I am using the Bueno theme and you can view my blog here:
    http://lovealamode.wordpress.com/
    (Custom domain and mapping takes a few hours to update I’m told…)
    The main thing I would like to do widen my header by about one inch on each side, and widen the main post box by one inch on each side as well. (So that generally everything just looks wider, but that the widgets and post box are aligned with the edges of the header.)

    One other question I have about the limits of CSS Customization: If I wanted to allow for advertising buttons in the future, is it a possibility to center my post box and add widget boxes on both sides?

    Any advice/help anyone can contribute is much appreciated!!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    No. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade, lest you find your competitors’ ads displaying your blog.

    There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com. It’s for blogs on their own domains. This is the homepage for the WordAds program: WordAds.co. http://www.wordads.co/ There you will find the application page as well as FAQs.
    http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/11/29/wordads/
    http://wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads

    Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds, no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.com

    If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    P.S. I don’t help with CSS editing but others do.

    So even though I purchased the WordPress Value bundle that includes “No Ads to hide all ads on your site,” I still am not able to run my own ads?

    It seems like it would be relatively simple using custom CSS to create an image (ad) with a link to an external site and place the button under the header or on a sidebar, am I wrong?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Because I was able to run affiliate links through the text widget when I was using free wordpress.com ……

    (as long as they were in HTML and not Java, that is.)

    Correct. Please see http://support.wordpress.com/advertising/ for details.

    You might consider building up traffic on WordPress.com first and then either applying to WordAds or switching to a WordPress.org setup once you have built up some traffic.

    None of the policies I linked to above are new. You are in viloation of the Terms of Service. There is no upgrade you can purchase from WordPress.com that allows you to posts affiliate links unless they are to creations as stated in this narrow exception here in talics lettering:

    Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

    I strongly advive you to canace/refund all of the bundle that you can refund (not the domain mapping) http://en.support.wordpress.com/bundles/#cancel-a-bundle and then hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.com install. http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    edit: cancel/refund

    Hmm, interesting. Well thank you for the advice. I don’t consider my blog to be in violation of the ToS since it doesn’t at all fall into the category of an affiliate marketing blog. Since my blog is a personal fashion blog, I think it would be reasonable to consider that I would include links to websites that I like to shop at and which I feature clothes from on my blog from time to time. Since I’ve never made any money from the links, I wouldn’t consider myself in violation of the ToS, but I’ll keep that in mind for the future.

    Still looking for help with the CSS customization though!

    Some affiliate links are okay. Here is a thread in the support forums that talks more about which affiliate links are OK or not OK.

    I think your fashion blog fits in just fine for that!

    Here is an example showing how to widen the Bueno theme. I opted to widen the main container plus the content area both by 200 pixels. You can experiment with the width values until you get the size you want. This example also takes into account that you will want to replace the header image with a wider one.

    .col-full {
    	width: 1140px;
    }
    #main {
    	width: 820px;
    }
    #header-image img {
    	display: none;
    }
    #header-image {
    	display: block;
    	background: url(http://lovealamode.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/cropped-icecream6d.jpg) repeat-x;
    	border: 5px solid #EFEFEF;
    	width: 1140px;;
    	height: 198px;
    	padding: 0;
    }
    #pagenav {
    	padding-bottom: 12px;
    }

    Change the url() value to an image link from your media library. Change the width value to the width of your image. Change the height value to the height of your image.

    You should also update the limit width setting on the Appearance → Custom Design → CSS page to match the final #main width you choose.

    Oh really? None of the affiliate links in the sidebar of that blog are to any products made by this blogger.

    Thanks designsimply and timethief, reading that thread was a big help! Now I can focus on making my blog pretty :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @timethief, I think the jist of the archived thread is that you don’t necessarily have to make the product yourself, but it has to be to a reputable source that really supports the content of your blog and has a purpose at heart (for me it’s helping my readers find affordable fashion) of which the sole purpose isn’t just making money.
