BUG: Copied posts cannot be edited/saved

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, this is a major bug that just popped up today.

For my blog, I copy existing posts to use as a template and then edit them with new content so I don’t have to format new posts every day. As of this morning, any edits I make to a copied post revert back to the original text/content as soon as the draft auto-saves. For example, if I copy a post called “The top songs of November” to use for December, I’ll usually replace the word “November” with “December” in the title but as soon as the draft auto-saves it reverts back to “November.” Same thing with any content in the body of the post. This is incredibly frustrating and needs to be fixed asap because it’s making workflow very difficult/impossible.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hmm, that sounds like an issue that I haven’t come across. Do you know whether this is happening only on a specific theme? Because some of the modern themes use template-based configuration.

  • Unknown's avatar

I meant to say that, if you are using a modern theme, you might want to check the underlying template to see if that’s where the content is coming from.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think my theme is “Sight.” It’s the same one I’ve used since the beginning of 2016 since I launched the blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sight theme appears to be retired and is no longer receiving updates or support. This could potentially impact your site, like bug you are experiencing. I am not saying that the status of the retirement is the cause of the bug. Rather, it would be a good idea to switch to one of the modern themes.

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there guidance somewhere on how to do this? My site has a large readership and thousands of posts so I’m quite weary of doing anything that could potentially change/erase any content or formatting.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s just a matter of navigating to the themes area, selecting something else and activating it: Change themes.

Considering the fact that you are on a very old theme though, you might want to carefully review the current theme settings to see if there is anything in particular that specific to this theme before making the change.

In terms of modern themes, you would want to check how templates introduce a fundamental editing / design change and familiarize yourself with it.

Carmochloe, that’s a really weird solution as it doesn’t address the underlying problem. I wish I could upload a video to you. Like Jamesn65, I take a previous post, copy it (since it will have all the formatting and tags I need) and then start working on it. I take TITLE A and replace it with TITLE B. I begin typing my new comments and – snap – you actually see it change back to what was there before.

Sure, the theme is one thing, but if the theme we have has been working for 7 years (it has), it should go on working. I work in IT; you don’t release an update that breaks something for your users. This is like Word randomly deciding it doesn’t like what you’re typing and reverting it on you. Today, one of our posts went live with a previous title, which took a lot of jiggery-pokery to get it working correctly. That’s not “you’re using an outdated template”, that “our product is broken and we aren’t fixing it”.

Can we do something about it?

  • Unknown's avatar

@jamesn65 the sanest way to check if the problem is theme related is to export then import some content into a test site and then see if the issue persists.

Here too, can you tell us which editor you’re using, Classic or Block? What OS and Browser?

@dracrossthepond I answered in your other forum thread. https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/titles-11/

  • Unknown's avatar

I can replicate the issue you are facing but for me I can change the body of the text but I can’t change the title of the copied post. Well, I can change it but it doesn’t “stick”. The simplest workaround is not to use that “copy” feature. Instead navigate to the post and copy the html body of the original post. Then paste that into a new post and give it a new title. It doesn’t really take much longer working that way. However I’d be interested in staff investigating this oddness.

Import/export – I can try when I have time back at the desk.

I’m using the block(head) editor which I also found was a misstep, but I’ve adjusted to it so I can live with it now. OS is Win11 (23H2) and OS is Chrome.

Interestingly, I have noticed Chrome is not loading right while Edge is, but I’ve cleared my cookies, tried incognito mode, and tried on another system altogether and it’s consistent with Chrome. You make a good point that I should try to edit in Edge and see how that goes. I’ll do that when back as well and share that feedback. I am not a fan of edge, but if it solves the problem while the tech giants at WordPress figure out what’s going on, so be it.

It also appears that it doesn’t matter if you copy the post from either of the Posts dashboards, Classic or Default (Calypso). I just tested this on my demo site using Rebalance, which is not a retired theme

    Flagged for Staff.

  • Unknown's avatar

Brilliant. Thank you for flagging it to the staff. JustJennifer made me log in with Edge and that seems to be working, so I wonder if the browser is part of the problem. What are you using? (JustJennifer, Jamesn65 and themagicrobot?) This could be isolated if we were all having issues with the same browser.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m a co-writer on the same site, and it’s nothing to do with the browser, because I use Firefox and encounter the exact same problems. Also, somebody at WordPress has broken the CTRL+K link facility at some point a few days ago. If you start typing a title in the box that comes up you get a spinny circle forever. No results ever come up. You have to go into the link settings to see any recent articles, and other than that you have to manually copy and paste the url. Again, we have both encountered this problem on different browsers and using completely different systems.

  • Unknown's avatar

And you just got a brand new laptop, right? So it’s unlikely that the error is on our side. I’ve seen the same issue with the link feature where I had to open another browser tab, find the link, then copy paste it. I think someone started their holidays early and let everything fall apart. :-(

  • Unknown's avatar

I take it back – the browser has nothing to do with it. I am using Edge and it too is reverting, not allowing me to save the title, so my drafts look like I have 2 of the same thing.

I take it no one on the WordPress side works on Sundays? Genuinely a miserable experience. My boss would be calling for my head if our services were this disrupted. (Anyone hear of a P1 incident?)

  • Unknown's avatar

The problem has not been fixed yet, and the search function for linking to posts within CTRL+K is still broken as usual as well (again, same problem on different systems and different browsers, in different countries!)

  • Unknown's avatar

I used Firefox latest on a Win10Pro PC on my test site.

I’d like to make a suggestion. Staff generally handle the queue waiting for them by date, with threads with the most recent replies at the bottom of that queue. So unless you have more information that would contribute to helping resolve the issue, like browser/OS info and suchlike, avoid adding additional replies.

I’d also suggest that if you have paid for access to support by email, etc., that you consider availing yourself of those options. https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/

  • Thanks for flagging this folks – I can confirm this is a known bug that we’re working on a fix for. We’ll update in this thread once it is resolved.

  • Unknown's avatar

Jennifer, I’m pretty sure the staff will manage just fine navigating around a forum. As for your suggestion about using email support, that won’t help other people encountering the same problem, who I am sure will be interested in reading this thread. Jordesign thank you very much for the information.
