Bug fixes for beep beep boop editor
-
. . . to see whether WP had listed the things it said it would — what’s not changing and what’s on the bug fix list. . . .
If someone from WP can say . . . what is the status of that list of “to be fixed” and definitely not going to change? Thanks.
I’m re-posting my question from earlier today in a new thread since the one I originally posted in was closed this afternoon by @lizthefair – which is fine by me.
@jeremeylduvall said on that thread some days ago he would try to provide a list of fixes planned and things that will not be changed on the new editor (the beep beep boop editor).
I would like that list whenever it’s available because I have several significant issues with the new editor – one of them being that theme options (such as placing a post in a slider or a section of editors’ picks) are not available in the new editor. @jeremeylduvall provided a way to work around that, since it’s not known when/if theme options will be accessible in the new editor. Fine, I know that now. But I imagine there are other items that WP is undertaking to fix. And other items that WP does not plan to change.
So could someone at WP provide some sense of timing on when we might get a list?
Hope this is clear. Thanks.

Hi @jaw501,
As of yesterday, page templates should be available in the new editor as shown here:
Can you take a look on your side and let me know if that provides the similar functionality you were looking for out of wp-admin?
Regarding the list, we’ll be posting a round-up in the main forum thread today. I’ll post the link here when it’s up!

@jeremeylduvall
What IS the “main forum thread” now that “please re-instate …” has been closed? -

Hi @jeremeylduvall: Thanks. Great to know page templates available.
However, my issue is the theme options available in the classic editor for my premium themes. For example: If I edit this post http://canadianartjunkie.com/2015/03/25/sandra-meigs-governor-generals-award-winner/ in the new editor, I don’t get the theme options I use, such as put post in the big slider or remove it from the big slider, or place post in editor’s picks. Those functions, I acknowledge, are accessible in the classic editor only.
You mentioned at some point that WP was thinking about whether to make theme options available in the new editor. I realize that may take a while, if it happens at all. But you asked what I meant so I’m just describing my own dilemma when editing and posting in the new editor. Maybe it just applies to people with premium themes?

From Happiness Engineer LizTheFair:
We’ve been asked for clarification on what’s been fixed, what we are working on, and which features from WP-admin are not being included in the new editor. Here is that update
Recent updates
When you create or edit a page in the new editor you can now set or change the page template that is applied.
It’s now possible to use a year, or any other number as a category or tag in the new editor.
Your 100 most used tags and categories are loaded, then the first 20 are displayed alphabetically. Starting to type a category/tag name pulls up all the matching options.Known Issues We are actively working on fixing the following issues.
Editing a post or page sometimes results in lost line breaks
The white edit box is rendering below the sidebar for some usersIf you would like to report a specific bug or request a specific feature be added to the new editor please start a new thread with the “modlook and “new editor feedback” tags.
We will reply directly to all bug reports and use the feature requests to inform the continued iteration of the new WordPress.com dashboard.

I’m reposting this from the now closed previous thread because it is useful and there may be many people who won’t see it there.

Hi @jaw501,
Thanks for bringing this up! I’m trying to dig up some more examples of themes that have specific post attributes. Is the Outspoken theme the only one you’ve noticed with this issue or do you have others? I appreciate any help! (Also, sorry if you’ve already given me other examples before.)
-
@jeremylduvall ,
So I have three premium themes. You know about Outspoken. On Global Art Junkie ( http://theartjunkie.wordpress.com ), the On Demand theme (heavily used across WP) has similar theme options and also on an older theme I still use, Delicious Magazine.
Now some of those options are triggered by categories and tags, some by widget placement and some by the way Outspoken works (checking off a box in the classic editor post sidebar, beneath tags and categories and selecting certain posts to go in certain spots)
I understand fully that I can still use the classic editor to accomplish these otpions. It’s just that having no frills at all in the new editor makes it virtually impossible to post or edit in the beep, beep bop editor.
I’m not sure, though, how you would import any of these theme options into the new editor – since they’re all different, and all theme specific. I know from trying out different premium themes over the years that an awful lot of the themes have similar conventions, so I”m not clear at all how they’d be merged with the new editor.
I just know there’s no way to properly use the premium themes I have myself while I’m posting or editing an existing post in the new editor.
So I rely completely on WP to keep the classic editor, as promised.
Hope this helps.

Hi @jaw501,
This definitely does help! I appreciate the additional examples. Also, just to confirm, the classic editor will continue to exist in wp-admin. No plans to remove it!
I took a look at all three themes you mention. For both On Demand and Delicious Magazine, it looks like the featured content area is managed by either categories or tags. Outspoken looks to be the only theme that offers the post-specific customizations for “Display post in.” Since this appears to only affect a small amount of themes, I don’t know that it will get added to the new editor. For now, the best option would be to continue to use the classic editor for that theme. I’m sorry I don’t have a better suggestion!

@jeremeylduvall Thanks for the info. As long as the classic editor stays, I’m reluctantly OK. Appreciate the back and forth on this.

@ Jeremeylduvall That’s good enough for me! The first clear statement we’ve had on this matter. It’s much appreciated.

Jeremy, with all my due respect. So many users have clearly manifested their preference to the old editor. So why don’t provide a way to set it by default?. Specially to edit existing posts?
I made the mistake of clicking on the “Switch to the improved posting experience”, and since then I am not longer able to use the old editor directly from an existing post. To use the old editor I must go through Posts->All Posts->Find The post->Edit
This is very annoying. You must listen to customers. Even if you think that the new editor is better because you have worked long time on it, and invested resources in it, it may not be the case. Actually it isn’t any better than the old one. Many users are deeply frustrated by having to use it.
Please provide the ability to set the preferred default editor.
Thank you very much in advance for listening to your users.
-
Hi @joanlluch,
The only way to access the classic editor for right now is through the method you mention (All Posts -> Edit). We don’t have plans in place right now to put in a preference so that the edit link defaults to the classic editor.
-
The new editor does not have an option to change permalinks, or does it? I cannot find it. Please advise.

@jeremylduvall
Thanks … but we already all know this. It’s been reiterated by “Happiness” Engineers for months. And a roundabout “access” is definitely not the same thing as being able to “set” our choices. Which is exactly what we’re asking for. We want CHOICE. Incredibly long threads have been created which all boil down to the one thing many users of WordPress want. We want the ability to choose once and for all what platform we are using. Not these “roundabouts.
The whole problem is that no one is listening. We’re just being told that there are no plans right now for giving us the option we want.
Perhaps the WP development department should reconsider what seems to be a very sore point with many experienced WP users.

I believe Staff are well aware of what we want. I believe they are not going to provide choice in this case. I also believe that creating new threads and or posting into older threads like this older one will not change their position, whether or not we post a lame +100% or I totally agree type of comment, or a lengthy comment that will say, in essence, what has all been said before.

We cannot chnage pêrmalink structure on any WordPress.COM hosted blogs. We can change post slugs only https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-title-and-permalink-url
I do not use the new editor so I do not know if one can change post slugs when using it. I use the classic editor where that can be done. If you are focused on locating the ways and means of accessing the legacy or classic pages for creating posts, editing posts, and viewing stats go to http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2015/04/05/navigating-the-classic-wordpress-com-interface/
